What is a Route?
A route is a path, an elevation profile, and can include a cuesheet, points of interest, photos, and more. You can find routes in your area with our Route Search, or plan your own on the Map Ride page.
What is a Trip?
A trip is a route that you rode (or ran, kayaked, etc) on a particular day/time. Whenever you upload data recorded from a GPS unit, you are creating a trip.
There are several ways to create a trip on Ride with GPS:
- Draw a route that you rode (Add Content - Map Ride): After you draw a route, you have the option to record it as a trip in the save dialog. You can enter in details such as the date/time, and any details you collected on a bike computer (avg heart rate, speed, etc).
- Upload multiple files (Add Content - GPX, TCX, FIT): This is our bulk upload page, and you can upload one or more files at a time that you recorded on your phone or GPS unit. We currently support GPX, TCX, FIT, and KML formats. Once processed, your uploaded files will save as trips if there is time data in the file.
- Sync with your Garmin GPS unit (Add Content - Garmin Sync): We support using the Garmin Communicator Plug-in to easily sync recorded data from your Garmin GPS unit. Once processed, this data will be saved as one or more trips.
- Manually log a single ride (Add Content - Log Ride): This page lets you record a trip by uploading a single file (GPX/TCX/FIT/KML), or selecting one of your routes, and providing any details you'd like to record such as the date/time, bike computer data (if it isn't provided in your uploaded file), etc.

Setting a default map location
Our search as well as route mapping tool defaults to Portland, OR. To change this, you must edit your profile preferences and set a default location. You can access your profile settings from the "Profile" menu at the top of the page:

Once you are on the profile settings page, interact with the map to set your default location. You can use the search box above the map to zoom and center on a specific area, then, click the map to set the center:

While you are setting your default location, make sure to set your timezone as well, so your Departed At times are correct for all your activities. The timezone setting is just below the map, visible in the screenshot above.
