Resolved: Editing

Started by Scot Bross on Feb 26, 10
I am unable to edit saved routes. Specifically adding turns that weren't initially picked-up by the cue sheet and also removing sections that were incorrectly mapped. . When I try to remove a section, such as an incorrect route through a turn, the entire route is deleted.

Agreed. This also happens to me. It would be great in edit mode for all the track points to appear and then remove/edit/add as desired. It is a real pain to plot out 160km of a route only to discover that you made an error or wish to change the route at the 50km mark!

Agreed, IMHO the inability to edit routes is the biggest single weakness in the product.

Hey, can you guys implement the "drag and drop" route editing a la Google bike routes? That would be awesome.

Yes. If I'm documenting a route, RidewGPS is great. If I'm working on a new ride switching between roads to use lower traffic routes, increase or decrease distance, include another scenic point, I use other tools

Ideally, we would have drag and drop route editing by now. Unfortunately, Google did not release this feature in their API, so it has to be coded from scratch, which isn't really easy by any means. We know you want it, so we're trying our best to figure out how to do it. Thanks for your feedback so far, everybody!

FYI everyone, Cullen is actively working on fixing up route editing. Stay tuned, we have a really exciting release right around the corner.

Glad to hear you are working on fixes. I tried adding route points to get the cue sheet to provide all the correct instructions. I can add one point, but if I try to add a second point, then the cue sheet lists wildly inaccurate distances.

As a "trick", I added very short "turns" in the road that created separate "boxes" for me to ad info in the cue sheet in their own set of lines. (I tried to word that so users would understand but it may be confusing)
Anyway that is a part-time fix.... though I may have gotten over zealous about it as after my last edit and save, I LOST the cue sheet entirely. (no idea of how that happened)

Your "delete segment option" is much better than "drag and drop" - provided you get a the "replace segment" working. Right now I can create a new segment and connect it to one end where the deleted segment was. But how do I connect the other end ? I always end up with two routes. An alternative would be to implement a way to connect two routes (also connecting their cue sheets of course).

I agree, I'm getting pretty frustrated with the Add Course Point functionality. Not only will it not let me put course points where I want them, the performance/speed is dreadfully slow when I attempt to add a course point.

I agree that the Add Course Point is in serious need of improvement. Since my rides often alternate between roads and sidewalks/paths, I need to manually add course points to create turn-by-turn directions that are complete. The longer the route, the slower the process, until it completely comes to a halt. Is there an upper limit to the number of data points? It sure seems like it!

My first attempt to create a 50-mile route ended was ended by the Add Course Point bug. Here's where things ended: Distance: 36.2 mi; # of Track Points: 718; # of Course Points: 72. No more course points can be added, so the turn-by-turn directions cannot be completed. Please fix this. Your bells and whistles mean nothing if the program's basic functionality fails.

I just deployed some good performance changes to the planner, as well as drag/drop editing. Also, you can now cut-to-end of route. The performance changes are noticeable on longer routes. Hopefully this fixes some of the issues.

It took me an entire week, rewriting about 1500 lines of code, to get things improved. I wish there was more to "see" for all that work besides just drag/drop! I also added points of interest, but it's not publicly ready for consumption.

The work I just did layed the foundation of a much improved route editing experience. One of the things I am not satisfied with is the cuesheet stuff. I don't have a good idea for how to improve it yet, but it's definitely on my mind.

Finally, I am almost ready to push out a save/save as functionality. This will let you modify an existing route and save it as a new one, rather than updating the existing. Great for making a new route that is close to an existing one. I will also be extending this to allow people to 'snag' routes from anyone, edit that route, and save it to their own profile.

Sorry for the lack of communication on my end - between moving cities, finishing school, earning a buck and then the RWGPS stuff I have been doing, it's left me little time to communicate with you all. Definitely a bad move on my part!

May be a consequence of the above update, but attempting to edit a saved route gives me an empty map and a button saying "No data yet!" and a legend telling me to "Start Clicking!"

Same here, can't edit routes. If I click edit I am presented with an empty map telling me no data.

@Kemo - I also can't figure out how to draw a route that uses some of the same roads on the way back. The blue dot appears, and when clicked, completely removes the segment. It would be nice if the 'drag and drop' could be selectively enabled/disabled.....

Strange: edit comes up blank (no route), with map centered in the Atlantic, south of Ghana, for one of my routes: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/77846/edit . And it's not there when I recenter at the location it's supposed to be at.
View comes up OK. It's a very short route. No big deal, just strange.

I have not had any issue with the blue dot because I have found if you click anyway the route is created or it does for me anyway.
