Service Icons

Started by John Nettles on Mar 03, 10
This feature would allow the maps author to put in RWGPS standardized icons at a specific location, i.e. conv. store, grocery store, café, campground, etc. While this would pertain more to longer distance rides, it would be extremely helpful for bike tourists.

One idea for this would be to do what Google My Maps does: have a set of standard icons, but also allow people to use their own custom icon images hosted elsewhere on the web.

Also would be helpful to be able to search on a map for specific places such as conv. stores. I like to be able to identify places to stop for water, etc that are close to my route, especially when riding in unfamiliar areas.

We often ride long distance training rides before even longer distance sportives and challenges. Often we need to identify key aspects of the ride to allow us to prepare accordingly. I would like to have these icons automatically transport into the Garmin TCX route I download, so that I do not have to go back an add then in training centre.

Being able to show where bathrooms, watering holes, convenience stores and the like would be an exceptionaly useful addition to the great program you've already created.

I note that this issue still has not had the attention it deserves, and for a service that allows me to plot a route to follow on my GPS, I would have thought the ability to add some custom icons to identify details of the ride would be a major aspect. Other GPS route builders have them, why don't we?

Apologies - in part. I realise now that the custom cue sheet entry will import into the Garmin TC (but it only adds the name of the type of icon, not the description of what it is. ie it says 'food' or 'left' but not the information in the box added at the time of the cue sheet entry).
Also - is there a way of quickly deleting all the useless cues, which on a route you are familiar with are not necessary?
