There and back

This feature would allow you to draw a route one way and have it auto-complete the route going back

I try and do loops wherever possible, but I have to agree it'd be great to be able to reverse a route if you have no choice but to follow exactly the same route on the return journey.

perhaps even being able to reverse a route. I frequently use different routes in my commute to and from work but I would like to enter them in only once but then be able to reverse their order.

Both the options mentioned here would be great - "Out & Back" as well as reversing direction on a loop are quite useful.

Short of an automatic out-and-back, it would be nice to be able to manually return to the starting point. Now when I try to have the return route use the same roads as the out route, I get the blue dot and can't select the route.

I had trouble drawing an out 'n back today, too. It used to be simple enough to just click your way back along the outbound route, but with the most recent update, that appears to have changed. Like Mike C. said above, I now get the blue dot and it becomes very difficult to draw the return route. I managed to make it work by zooming way in and clicking just far enough off the outbound route to recognize it as a new piece of the route, but this is not how it used to work and is far from ideal.

I agree with the suggestions, and was having trouble plotting a recent bike ride. I ended up making two routes, which at least has the total mileage correct (mostly) If an out and back function is not available, why not revert to the way it used to be?

Things have been reverted, so you can click your way back without a problem at this point.

Yes. An automatic out-and-back function to complete a route; a "reverse" function to reverse the direction of a "loop" type route; and a function to use automatic routing to close a loop to the start from whatever point was last mapped would all be great features.

I second David Hartson's List!

Auto reverse would be a nice feature for me. I contend there might be errors (added mileage) where there is a median that separates the road. I have to be careful when I create a route not to click on the wrong side of the median.

Any news on whether this will become a feature? I love this site for speed and simplicity but mapmyride wins with the out & back and climb scores.

Hmm, not sure this has really been thought through. I have manually created 'there and back again' routes and all is fine until I leave the route, either accidentally or intentionally. Then, when I rejoin the route, my Edge800 often picks up the route going the wrong way! For that reason, I think your better off having two seperate routes if you intend on following the same route back.

Yes! Exactly what happened to me on a 200k out-and-back yesterday. Riding along just fine, then I circled back to pick up a dropped friend. From then on, the route kept wanting me to turn around and head for home. Annoyed me the rest of the day. Interesting idea to make two separate routes!

Makes sense about creating two seperate routes, but what about a feature that auto reverses your route & creates the seperate 'back' for you to save re-tracing a new route? Like a copy & reverse button?

Come on guys - trying to use Garmin TC to make a waypoint on the route back is too hard, the lines are often indistinguishable no matter how far one zooms in. In effect it should be possible to have a separate line (the other side of the road on the way back) to identify that route specifically, otherwise as people have said above, the Edge makes an assumption and incorrectly decides you are on the other path. It is not only an out and back plot that causes trouble, simple loops that use parts of the route out have the same issue - so this is not solved by a suggestion to have an out and back button.
This is a bigger issue than you think - I have spent hours re-doing routes I planned for Italy and France to avoid the incorrect waypoint icons being in the wrong part of the journey!!!

This will be addressed soon - we are almost finished with a rewrite of our elevation profile, and after that is done we can concentrate some attention on route editing, as well as the out/back feature. I haven't yet decided how to deal with the return line. It would be *really* slick if I could pop the two lines apart when you moused near, but i don't know how feasible that actually is...

"In-out" or "back to start": set an offset distance (user definable) from road center line... say 10 feet from center; RIGHT/LEFT side of road so that return trip track does not conflict with initial track. Bike Route toaster does a good job of this but fails in others; this site has the best overall appeal and functionality.
Other sites that feature the in-out function fail in accurately reversing the turn course points
