Route entry and cue sheets

Started by Gordon Stewart on Mar 14, 10
Many of the folks in our club use Ridewithgps to prepare routes and then invite others to join them on the ride. People use the maps to illustrate the route but the word on the street is that the cue sheets are pretty unreliable and are generally not used. This is a pity because for the most part the cue sheets are fine, it is the technique used to enter the route that was the problem. Compare http://ridewithgps.com/routes/40682 with http://ridewithgps.com/routes/41349, these are for the same route, same distance but the cue sheet could not be more different. In the case of 40682 many of the turns are missing and the distances are mostly wrong and in the printed version some of the distances are actually negative values. In the case of 41349 the cue sheet is valid and the distances correct. The difference is that when I prepared 41349 I clicked on the open sections of road but my friend who made up 40682 clicked on the road intersections. In many cases he overshot the intersection by a few feet and the route reversed itself to make a wrong turn and also mess up the mileage. I know your documentation says to click on the clear segments of road but your system is so easy to use that no one bothers with the documentation. Suggestion: You must be able to detect a situation where a route reverses itself for a short distance before or after going onto a new road. This would seem to be an indicator that the operator clicked on an intersection but overshot his mark. At this point can you pop up a banner warning of the probable error and suggesting that they undo the last mark and only click on open stretches of road and not on intersections? This would allow you to detect poor practice and correct it before it becomes a problem. Just a thought...

I've had this problem too, and resolved it as you did by clicking a little down the route. I've also told our club members to click on the road you are turning onto.

I supposed it's possible to delete turns that are less than .1mi before a turn. However this would eliminate some legitimate turns.

There are some roads that, for some odd reason, no matter what you do, they don't automatically register and show up in the cues. I fix this by adding cues manually. I agree with your comments about taking care where you click, lest you end up with inadvertent U-turns.

I think both these situations are related to the google map interface and google map data rather than anything ridewithgps is doing.

It's a year later and I haven't found the documentation either.
