Inaccurate elevation data

Started by HouckStar on Sep 19, 11
Hello. I use a Garmin 305 and Garmin Connect. I have noticed that recently there is a very large difference between the elevation profiles when I upload from the device to both Garmin Connect and Ride With GPS. For example: On a recent ride, the vertical elevation was measured at 3,334 ft. on Garmin Connect. When I uploaded the same ride to RWGPS via the Garmin, the vertical elevation was 8,331 ft. Below is the link to my page with the ride (Cook Forest Ride). Is there anything I have set incorrectly? Thanks. -Chris Houck (houckstar) http://ridewithgps.com/trips/395123

Is your device an Edge 305 or a forerunner? If it's a forerunner, then the problem is the elevation from the unit is *really* bad. The Edge 305 has a barometric pressure based altimeter, which is much more accurate than the cheaper GPS based altimeter. Connect is smarter than us in this regard - if you upload from a device they know to have a GPS altimeter, they automatically refetch elevations using a more accurate dataset. You have to do that manually on our service for the time being, by editing a trip.

Are you using an Edge or a Forerunner?
