Barometric Pressure Correction?

Started by bobthib on Mar 19, 10
Just wondering if there is a website that will allow for local barometric pressure to be downloaded for a given area and time, and used to correct elevation info in the Garmin ride files. Some rides look like I rode up a cliff, or fell off due to a front moving though.

From what I can tell the Garmin uses barometric pressure for altitude differentials. Basically it syncs down the absolute altitude from GPS and then uses the barometric pressure to smooth out the noisy GPS-provided altitude.

Local barometric pressure changes throughout the day due to normal weather fluctuations.

I have to believe that it checks the bar more often. Fla is so flat that my normal rides of 40 miles may only have climbs of 100 to 300 ft. The elevation histogram looks a bit jagged, but the scale my be 0 to 20 ft. The only time we have any real elevation change is on an overpass, or dunes by the ocean.

I've had rides where I looks like I've fallen off a cliff of 100 ft, or ridden up a shear face 200 ft. I don't remember those rides ;^)

I'm going to post in the Garmin forums and maybe I can get answers from Garmin direct. Some of their gurus post and answer threads.
