The Plains of Abraham

AKA: Smith Creek and Ape Canyon

The weather was looking PERFECT so we decided to get one last summer ride under our knobby tires before autumn rolled in and brought the rains. My faithful riding companion and I made a full day of it. 3 hours of driving each way to ride along the foot of a (semi)active volcano.

It's a fair amount of elevation change for the number of miles.
Riding along the ridges of the Smith Creek trail, we were treated to some amazing landscapes. But once we got to the stairs, it was getting late in the day so we turned around.
Although it took the majority of our time just to ride one length, we were able to downhill most of the return trip back to the car and start the long drive back to Portland. I highly recommend anyone check out the Plains of Abraham, but go while it's hot otherwise the area may just be packed in with snow like it was during our 2015 attempt.
  • Riding on a volcano is always awesome.
  • Very quiet and serene minus the continuous crunch of pumice under your tires.
  • Alien landscapes once you get above the tree line.
  • No flats on our ride, but plenty of sharp volcanic rocks to tear your tires.
  • Take lots of food and water. Water might be scarce and what you do find will need to be filtered.
  • Not terribly technical, but hilly enough to get your lungs and legs burning.
GET OUT AND RIDE!
