Southern Portugal

Coasting to the Castles

Author: Matthew Kadey
Southern Portugal is a land of rugged coastline, open horizons, castle wielding hilltop towns, Gothic towers and the largest cork forests on the planet. The endless rolling landscapes rich in reminders of the country's past are begging to be explored on two wheels. Which is just what my partner Tabi Ferguson (a.k.a. the model for my photography) and I did for the month of April 2018 with a helping hand from Ride with GPS. Here is my photo essay of its natural wonders and living museum.

With a lower population density than many other parts of Western Europe, the lycra crowd has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to choosing quite roads in southern Portugal to glide along. Each ride seemed to end in us rhapsodizing about the dearth of cars and bounty of wide-open views.
