Twelve stalwarts of the Medium Ride left Uxbridge promptly and cycled hard through the Bucks Golf Course, Denham and up Rectory Lane in an effort (successful) to gain first service and beat the massed hoards at the Epi Centre cafe. We quickly made up a sign reading: “Full, no more Loiterers please” and staked it outside but this did not deter the Shorts and Longs from thronging the queue with much banter.
On to Latimer where we unfurled the South African flag over the grave memorial of the horse of the French military rascal George Henri Anne-Marie Victor de Villebois-Mareuil – with a name that long it’s just as well we shot him at the Battle of Boshof 1900 – the Bucks Yeomanry under Lord Chesham defeated the Boers on this occasion. Cliff engaged in heavy discussion on whether it’s the whole horse or just the heart that is buried here – moot point.
Some huge climbs through the Chiltern Hills and an encounter with a hedge cutter before we descended into Chesham – walking through the market stalls to the clock tower, Beer Shop and welcome Red Lion – the SA flag matched the landlord’s shirt but not his shaking hands. Refreshed with pints of Bombadier and Doombar plus some good basic food at good basic prices we sallied forth. A quick illegal diversion along river path to the Queens Head ( here Cliff shot off towards Tring !!! ) before we tackled the long slog up Fullers Hill – past the large houses & schools of Chesham Bois – a bumpy cycle pavement back to Little Chalfont and then a long swooping descent to Maple Cross ( with regular stops to pump the leader’s front tyre ) – Quale ‘Orrore ! the short riders were already ensconced and sassy – would we never be free of them ....
An excellent run with an excellent gang
