Buena Vista South River Out and Back 12 Miles

This route runs alongside the South River, in a fairly flat and wide valley. The vegetation is a bit straggly here, in contrast to some of the more mature woods and fields in the rest of the County.

This is a legacy of the flooding that has occurred here in the past. To ride here is to ride along a bit of a history – the flood caused by hurricane Camille in 1969 wiped out much of the railway that existed at that time and permanently ended rail service to Lexington. The rail was reconstructed only as far as Buena Vista.

The sycamores are slowly recovering, and happen to be favorites nesting spots for orioles. Look for the unmistakable black and orange in early summer. And on quiet days you can often find blue herons along the river.
