Coal Country Route

This 218 mile route leaves from Wildcat Harley Davidson before driving through downtown London and Levi Jackson State Park. The route follows Daniel Boone's Wilderness Road through Barbourville and Pineville. At Pineville you will have the option of riding to the top of Pine Mountain to Pine Mountain State Park and Chain Rock. From Pineville you will follow US 119 to the Heart of Kentucky's Coal Field. You will witness large deep mining operations. You will ride through or by the small towns of Harlan and Cumberland before coming into the historic coal mining village of Benham. At Benham make sure you stop and at the Mining Museum. Adjacent to Benham is the town of Lynch. In the 1920s through the 1960s Lynch was the largest mining town in the world. The historic cut sandstone company buildings are still standing and in use today. While in Lynch make sure you take the underground mine tour at Portal 31. From Lynch you will backtrack for about 25 miles to US 421. You will follow US 421 across Pine Mountain. This road was made famous by the 1958 Robert Mitchum movie Thunder Road. You will follow US 421 through the hamlet of Hyden before taking the Hal Rogers Parkway back to London and Wildcat Harley.
