The town of Mojave is home to roughly 4,000 people and was founded in 1876 as a construction camp for the railroad that crossed the mountains near Tehachapi to the west. Shortly after, it was the end of the 20 mule team borax wagon route from Death Valley in the 1880's. Later on in the early 1900's, it became the headquarters of LADWP's aqueduct construction.
Since World War II however, Mojave has taken on an important role as an aerospace hub with the nearby Edwards Air Force Base and Mojave Air and Space Port. Space industry development, flight testing, and aircraft storage are the three primary activities conducted in Mojave these days so keep your eyes to the sky when passing through. If companies are flying test flights that day, you might see some cool aircraft!
