This route is 99% gravel and is mostly made up of all descents and climbs. Not a lot of flat recovery sections. As of mid March 2025, all of 302 road has fresh gravel. May want to give it sometime to pack.
Rode this route yesterday on my gravel bike with a front shock. Very glad to have it because some sections were very rocky. I'm an above-average gravel rider and found this route very challenging. Despite what RWGPS shows, this is about 95% gravel, anything from freshly laid gravel road to rocks, ruts, and tree debris. Damaged my RD in fact on something.
This route works well with a mountain bike. The gearing of the mountain bike is more useful due to the grades encountered. Big Frog Road is very rocky with embedded limestone. Some rutting is present but not much. If using a gravel bike, I would recommend tires that are 40s or higher. This route is part of the Cohutta Mountain Bike Race.
