The Down East Sunrise Trail is 87 miles and is the longest off-road trail on the East Coast Greenway through a natural landscape of green forests and vast marshes, habitat for iconic moose, beavers, eagles, wild turkeys and white tail deer. Open to bicycles, walking, horses, cross country skiing, ATVs, snowmobiles and the occasional dog sled, the trail offers a multi-season chance to see downeast Maine in a new and very old light. This inactive rail corridor is an unpaved tour of the back country with gentle grades and opportunities for lodging, dining, camping, recreational fishing and learning about downeast history.
***This route may be more comfortable on a mountain bike due to rougher gravel conditions. Weekends tend to be busier with ATV riders.

I did a stretch from Whitneyville east to Marion on a gravel bike with 42mm knobbies at about 30psi. The first few miles weren't great; I had to focus on picking a line and so missed the views. But from Machias onward the trail smoothed out greatly and I cruised 15-20mph in stretches. Given the variable conditions, this trail is probably the most fun (and perhaps the fastest) on a full-suspension bike that pedals well. The views were remarkable, including a bald eagle in flight over the Machias river. This ride was on a Monday in August and ATV traffic was light. Drivers were all courteous and waved.
