USBR 281 North begins in Pullman and heads southeast along SR 27 and US 195 to the Washington/Idaho border, about 10 miles north of Lewiston, ID. It crosses part of the southern extent of scenic Palouse hills atop the Columbia Plateau. The route is bordered on both sides by rolling terrain covered in wheatfields and passes through the small towns of Colton and Uniontown.

The route continues briefly in Clarkston on USBR 281 South after several miles in Idaho.
