Traits: Low Traffic, Safe Bike Lanes and Shoulders, Scenic
Activity: Road Ride, Tourism
Well maintained, well marked bike trail leading into low-trafficked side roads for the return loop. Expect a few hills that are real kickers, but the majority is gradual inclines. The rest stop at John Wayne Marina is perfect. About half the route has enough trees to provide shade on a hot day. Makes for a lovely, scenic trip.
Conditions: Much of This Route Was on a Multi-Use Trail Also Used by Walkers and Horse Riders. There Were Many Intersections with Roads and Curves Not Conducive to Riding a Tandem Bike. One Stretch Was Unpaved (Dirt, Gravel and Grass) that Was Not Good for Narrow Tire Road Bikes.
Ride this route only if you don't mind part of the route being on a busy multi-use trail. I much prefer riding on surface streets with good bike lanes (even when the traffic is traveling 55+ MPH). The trail portion of this route is not ideal for tandem bikes because there are many "blind" curves.
