Trip Details – Day 1
Pittsburgh to Ohiopyle
We are heading out from the Marriott Courtyard in Homestead near the Waterfront Mall. We turn Left onto West Waterfront Drive and go a very short distance to the first restaurant where the Steel Valley Trail can be accessed through the parking lot. We then turn Right onto the Steel Valley Trail and follow the trail to McKeesport. There is a RR crossing as we enter the town. Follow the signs - Turn Right at Locust St. in McKeesport. Turn Right at Lysle Blvd.
About 25 miles into the trip, we hit the town of West Newton. There is a bike shop there (Korbers), and above the bike shop is a place to get lunch called the Trailside Cafe. There’s also a pizza place there.
After lunch, the next rest stop is Connelsville (odometer: about 58). The trail runs through a park here, and we take a good long break in the park under a large pavilion (picnic tables make surprisingly good nap mats). Stay in the park by the river, and go under a big bridge and you ride through town a bit. You’ll hit one traffic light (you keep straight), but there is a bike shop on the corner right there, should you need anything. Then it’s follow the trail 17 more miles to Ohiopyle (note the uphill grade increases during those last 10 miles).
You arrive in Ohiopyle after crossing over a river and you arrive at what once was a train station. The road behind the station goes “down” towards the gas station and general store (breakfast tomorrow!). Get your room assignment and check in at the Yough (pronounced yock) Motel
