North wind this morning, which is a little unusual & made the leg north a bit of a slog. Passed a guy on a mountain bike wearing baggies and he was putting down what looked like big watts just to keep a moderate pace. Tough going into that wind!
Saw two skunks on the road. Better than average but not unusual that time of day. Ever since I ran into a skunk on my bike it's a major freakout moment when I encounter one on the road. Ha! No coyotes this morning, though, which is a little unusual.
Read a lot of research indicating what I consider absurd amounts of carb consumption during endurance exercise. I'm talking >100g/hr. Always throught, well, that's the lab...I'm eating my calories on the road. Talked to some world tour level nutritionists who agreed but said the rule of thumb is 90g/hr. Still a LOT more than I've ever tried but never really tried to see how far I could take it. I took 3x25g gels/hr on this ride plus 3x electrolyte 'gulps' per hour on this ride. So about 350 calories/hr. No GI distress. But that's a lot of gels to be carrying around on a 10+ hour ride. Guess that's why they have neutral areas so you can crew up.
Also recently read some work by Roelands' work with DA reuptake inhibitors and heat stressed endurance. I'm certainly not going to take DA re-uptake inhibitors just to improve performance in a race but I've tried tyrosine in the past. That was strength sports & there was no performance increase but I figured, what the heck, let's try some tyrosine and see what happens. Don't know that it helped, though, and some of the in vivo dose-response curves I've seen for confirmed dopamine increase are a little scary (I'm not going to slam down 250mg/kg of tyrosine!). Still, it's not going to do any harm to take 1000mg of tyrosine before a race. And if it's going to be a 100 degree day or close, it definitely might do some good.

Estimated Time shows a prediction of how long it would take you to ride a given route. This number is based on your recent riding history, and represents an estimate of moving time. Each time you upload a new ride, your Estimated Time profile will adjust to reflect your most recent riding. Only rides exceeding 10 miles (16 km) will affect these estimates.
