Solo hike: I had planned to join a hike lead by a volunteer on the Y's GONE program (occasional hikes), but no one was at the meeting location, so I decided to go exploring anyway.
I took this at a very slow pace, more of a meander, and stopped to take pictures or just "look around" frequently.
I "enjoyed" a soaking rain during run-in to Grizzly Flat; happy I had carried my rain jacket! Uncertain which way to go when I reached a trail junction (Clemans Junction?) at mile 3.2: I figured the trail to the left was the original hike plan, but at 9 miles 1-way that was not terribly attractive to me, so I investigated the other two. Heading straight looked like it would lead to the shortest route to the CA-2, but the map looks like it takes what is called Plantation Rd, which makes a loop and the only mapped trail I see off of that may be obscure and difficult to find without a map, i.e., the Old Dark Canyon Trail. The 4.5 mi hike alternate of the Y's original hike plan is a branch off the trail to the left from the junction where I had found myself.
I backtracked and started up the trail to the right, and met a nice, older (my age?) couple with their retriever (another David, et al) coming down, and they told me it headed up to Mt Lukens, so I continued on. I encountered another hiker descending that trail (Dan), and he advised that I would reach a "T" at the Mt Lukens Truck Trail and I should turn right to get to the top. It was totally fogged-in by the time I got there so I could not tell where I was in relation to the summit versus the top of the Earl Canyon trail, so I continued with my plan to get to Haines Canyon at try and get a ride back to my car from Craig, who indeed helped (and fed! me).
I'd say I would have been happy to have finished in 10-12 miles as I was pretty much "done" by mile 12 when my right big toe started barking about slamming into the end of my boot as I descended. Fortunately, Craig was willing to pick me up at the top of Haines Canyon and gave me a ride back to my car (thank you, Craig!).
If I keep up this hiking, I need a pair of boots that fit properly, and probably a high-quality pair of poles! Happily, everything feels A-OK the following day. :-)

Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.
Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrumb trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 705/800/810/1000/Touring, but will not have any custom cues. Works great for Mio Cyclo. Find GPS specific help in our help system.
Estimated Time shows a prediction of how long it would take you to ride a given route. This number is based on your recent riding history, and represents an estimate of moving time. Each time you upload a new ride, your Estimated Time profile will adjust to reflect your most recent riding. Only rides exceeding 10 miles (16 km) will affect these estimates.
