This is a fantastic fall ride. Nearly all of this route was part of the Yaquina Lighthouse Century Ride. The route begins at Yaquina Bay State Park, just north of the Yaquina Bridge. Ride under the bridge, through the lower downtown section and pick up Yaquina Bay Road. This is a nearly 12 mile stretch along the bay and eventually the Yaquina River. There is a short, steep hill just before the end of this section.
Ride into Toledo. To avoid the highway 20 business route, there are a couple residential streets that are better. Although NW French Ave is a short, steep hill. Cross highway 20 and head north on highway 229, the Siletz Highway. This is a 30-mile stretch, with a few hills and some good rollers. There is a pretty decent shoulder. An option is to stop in Siletz for a rest stop. The highway meanders along the Siletz River and passes a few state parks. The final 3 miles head west and end up at highway 101.
Be careful crossing 101 to head south. Ride 6 miles to Depoe Bay, for another possible rest stop. The highway 101 section is very scenic, although there is lots of traffic. The shoulder is nice and wide, but beware of loose small rocks. A couple miles past Depoe Bay, turn right onto Otter Crest Loop. This is the longest climb of the ride, 2.4 miles. However, the hill isn't overly steep. Also, after about 1/2 mile, the road becomes one-way with a nice bike lane. After the summit, enjoy a nice 1.5 mile downhill. Stay on Otter Crest Loop until it dumps out onto 101. The final 5 miles include a couple gradual hills, but the prevailing tail-wind helps. Upon reaching the north end of Newport, get off on Oceanview Rd and take this past Agate Beach State Park. Follow the Oregon Scenic Bike route back to the start.
Typically, from late spring through early fall, there is a prevailing north wind. It is nice to finish the final 18 miles with a tailwind. There are several beaches along the 101 section, including Beverly Beach. A stop at Boiler Bay is recommended as well.
As usual, my Garmin 830 provided incorrect elevation gain. It posted nearly 900 ft elevation gain for the first 5 miles. This was complete nonsense. Maybe 300 feet at the most. The remainder of the 5-mile laps seemed to be reasonable.
