Packrafting trip starting at Dunphys Campground. We took the overgrown and virtually impossible to follow Breakfast Creek Trail down to Coxs River which was thick with stinging nettles as well as plenty of landslides and fallen trees from the recent rain. Although RWGPS showed the trail being 5km to the river it actually took 10km and was completed in 5 or 6 hours, with endless creek crossings and map checking.
Once at the Coxs River the flow was way stronger and deeper than we'd imagined and were a little uncertain as to how to approach the next leg. We decided to push on with the trip as it would have been almost impossible to walk back, let alone painful.
We paddled for 2 or so hours until finding a suitable campsite, which was unfortunate as we had hoped for Konagaroo Clearing. We had a good spot nonetheless with a creek running nearby into the river to fetch water from as the Coxs River was full of sediment and who knows what else from up stream.
The next day although the water had gone down a fraction the rapids we came across were mostly unrunnable due to either trees nearby, in or after rapids. We aired on the side of caution and decided to portage around 3 or 4 of them in the end.
We made it to Konangaroo Clearing and checked out the old hut, it looks to not have been used in some time and would have made a great camping area but we can do that next time. The Kanangra Creek runs just beside and looks incredibly fresh but can't be relied on for flow for the most part.
After the hut we continued on down the river, always cautious and warry of the 15km hike out that we knew we'd finish in the dark. Although I thought the river would level out about as we came closer to the exclusion zone it didn't and we had a few more technical rapids that needed portage. These rapids in lower water would be great but the water level and amount of trees made everything a little bit more nuts.
Kelpie Point water gauge was around .8m. I'd say 5 would probably be perfect but may expose more hidden trees.
