Discover Stillwater MN

## Stillwater and the St Croix River Valley The section of the St Croix River, centered around Stillwater, is a National Scenic Riverway thanks to the efforts of senators Walter Mondale (MN) and Gaylord Nelson (WI) in 1968. The National Riverway helps form a 252-mile-long natural boundary between Minnesota and Wisconsin. Criss-crossing the river using six bridges allows for riding through many river towns, four counties, and a couple of states, on or close to the river. These communities include Afton, Bayport, Houlton, Hudson, Marine, New Richmond, Oak Park Heights, Osceola, River Falls, Prescott, Scandia, Somerset, St Croix Falls, Stillwater, and Taylors Falls, within Pierce, Polk, St Croix, and Washington counties. Routes of varying lengths and complexity are featured, appealing to various ages and abilities, as well as multi-generational family groups, providing something for everyone. Several gravel routes, some with short (1-mile) timed segments, are listed for the more-avid or racing cyclists. Many panoramic vistas exist over the river and its pastoral surroundings, providing photo opportunities not visible from a car. ## Stillwater, Minnesota Originally a Native village along the river, then a lumbering boom town, Stillwater, Minnesota, gained national fame for antiquing and rare books. Now Stillwater teems with silent sports habitats, trails, and waterways. With the collaboration of many governmental and community organizations and its citizenry, all networking their assets together, Stillwater has become a vibrant and resilient city for silent sports enthusiasts. Stillwater draws its name from the calmness of waters near its downtown, and is recognized as “The birthplace of Minnesota” (1848). With a population of about 20,000, sitting 20 miles east of Minneapolis-St Paul, from which it draws many of its visitors, Stillwater has some little-known facts, which include: In 1921, Charles Strite invented the automatic pop-up bread toaster in Stillwater; and Denis McDonough, born and raised in Stillwater, became President Obama’s White House Chief of Staff. ## Some local organizations that enhance our local riding and routes... * [Chilkoot Velo Cycling Club:](https://www.chilkootvelo.com/) We are a recreational and competitive cycling club in the Greater Stillwater area, and cyclists of all skill levels and ages (18+) are encouraged to join. After your ride, meet up with friends and family in downtown Stillwater. Enjoy live music and refreshments along the St. Croix river. (Routes with a "BTV" prefix have been a part of this event.) ## Your Ambassador... Mike Lyner Mike has been a 'bike- and 'map-a-holic' since he was around 14 years old. In his teen years Mike was a time trialist, road and velodrome racer, yet dabbled in bicycle touring. He emigrated from England to the USA in 1979, following his Architectural education and licencing, and eventually settled as a dual citizen in Stillwater MN. Prompted by a pamphlet describing the Mississippi ["Great River Road"](https://experiencemississippiriver.com/the-great-river-road-the-best-drive-in-america/#:~:text=The%20Great%20River%20Road%20National,important%20scenic%20byway%20in%20America.) Mike bike-camped this route with a friend, a week at a time for 5 years, from its headwaters to the delta. Currently Mike is the President of the 100-member Chilkoot Velo Cycling Club, and has worked with [Discover Stillwater](https://discoverstillwater.com/things-to-do/biking-hiking-trails/) to make the best biking routes in and around Stillwater more visible and usable for tourists and local citizens alike. Also, as a member of [Sustainable Stillwater MN](https://www.sustainablestillwatermn.org/bfc), Mike has worked on their efforts to gain Stillwater its 'Bicycle-Friendly Community' bronze certificate from [BikeMN](https://www.bikemn.org/), the local arm of the League of American Cyclists. East Coast Greenway

The East Coast Greenway is an in-development walking and biking route stretching 3,000 miles from Maine to Florida, connecting our nation’s most populated corridor. The East Coast Greenway is designed to transform the 15 states and 450 communities it connects through active and healthy lifestyles, sustainable and equitable transportation, community engagement, climate resilience, tourism and more. The Greenway offers a safe place for bicyclists, walkers, runners and more — of all ages and abilities — to commute, exercise and visit new destinations. Below you’ll find a selection of East Coast Greenway routes. The East Coast Greenway Alliance team has focused on lower-stress segments of the Greenway route that are popular day or multi-day destinations for this Ride With GPS collection. For additional planning information about the East Coast Greenway interim route, please visit [map.greenway.org](map.greenway.org). Included in this collection are some multi-day short routes developed in partnership with Adventure Cycling and Ride With GPS. For additional information about short routes visit [https://www.adventurecycling.org/routes-and-maps/short-routes/](https://www.adventurecycling.org/routes-and-maps/short-routes/) While the East Coast Greenway Alliance is constantly improving the safety of the Greenway route through its advocacy efforts, many of the current on-road connections, including those on the Greenway’s interim routes, have little or no special provisions for bicyclists or pedestrians. Long-distance travel via on-road sections of the Greenway is recommended for experienced cyclists only. Many lengthy traffic-free segments of the Greenway are suitable for families and cyclists, walkers and runners of all ages and abilities. The current on-road routing is housed on low-traffic roads whenever possible. We aim to be as clear as we are able about the conditions riders can expect by including alerts for known stressful sections on our online mapping tool at [map.greenway.org](map.greenway.org). Directional signage may or may not be present along the route. Users are advised to review state traffic laws, research current road conditions and discuss plans with people familiar with area roadways.undefined routes

Dive into WV’s Appalachian forests, farmlands and local communities; share the road with local wildlife, friendly folks in side-by-sides, or even the occasional mythical beast from local lore. This isn’t your smooth country club gravel, this is wild and wonderful, rugged and spicy—as much epic riding as you can handle! ## About the Gravel Route Network This collection of 28 routes ranges from 5-75 miles, with half between 10-35 miles. Three easy routes use only rail trails, and the rest all have significant climbing, generally 1000 feet per ten miles. Most rides span a few hours to a full day, but a number work well as [overnight experiences](https://ridewithgps.com/collections/3147466) offering lodging and camping. A multi-day gravel bikepacking route through the region is currently being developed. Riding surfaces average 60% unpaved across the full collection (dirt and gravel roads, crushed cinder rail trails, and occasional unimproved primitive roads more suitable for ATVs than cars). Most unpaved roads are in decent shape, but expect sections of fresh or loose gravel, embedded rocks and washed out ruts especially on steeper grades. Unpaved roads may be re-graded and have fresh chunky gravel dropped throughout their maintenance schedule or after weather events. It's rougher riding until this gets packed into the road. Another unique surface type is the "once a paved road" of broken-down and patchy pavement, which can be rough with asphalt edges (and generally shown on the map as unpaved). **Routes depart from seven regional hubs**, most are WV towns that offer additional services such as food and lodging ## Regional Hub Collections 1. We suggest at least a 45mm tire, and you won’t regret having a 2.x” tire on many of the routes. For gearing, many routes feature shorter, steep climbs (few rise higher than 1000’), but grades can vary from 10-20% or steeper for short sections. Consider gearing with lower than a 1:1 ratio (chainring to smallest cassette cog) as a minimum if you’re strong and fit, and preferably mountain bike or bikepacking gearing to save your knees and keep a smile on your face. Many cyclists have reported that a bikepacking bike setup, such as a rig equipped for the Tour Divide, is a good option for day riding around here! And many local riders default to a hardtail MTB to cover all unforeseen opportunities. ## When to Visit The best months to ride are April through October, with spring and fall days having colder temperatures overnight and even the possibility of snow at higher elevations. Spring colors usually peak in late April, and fall foliage in October. Summer months bring warm weather, though much of the route is shaded and benefits from the cooler temperatures at higher elevations, especially on the eastern edge of Preston County. Check out the Visit Mountaineer Country website for general planning information on the region. ## Safety Traffic is always a rider’s greatest concern; care and attention has been put into keeping routes off busy roads, although there may be short sections to connect into towns and their services, or unlock longer gravel corridors. Be extra careful at rush hour, and generally on any paved road with painted lines. At dawn and dusk, keep alert for darting deer especially on steep, fast and winding downhills (there’s usually more than one deer). Road surfaces vary and are generally more rugged on steeper grades, so make sure your bike and brakes are maintained to keep the rubber on the road when bombing downhill. Watch for side-by-sides, ATVs and dirt bikes, which love these roads as much as we do. Houses and farms with known unleashed dogs are marked with waypoints where notably encountered during research; best practice is to get off your bike and stand behind it, giving the dogs less reason to chase you and usually they will lose interest (or the owner will come out and call it in). Mobile phone coverage varies throughout the route and is most limited in valleys and farther from Morgantown; the jury’s still out on which network is best (AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon). Consider carrying a satellite communicator for emergency calls anywhere (Garmin inReach and newer iPhones). ## Acknowledgements This route traverses the traditional lands of the Shawnee, Massawomeck, and Osage. New York Cycle Club

The [New York Cycle Club](https://nycc.org/) is a volunteer-run organization serving the greater New York City area. **We currently have over 2,000 members and offer over 1,000 member-led rides each year, generally 7 days a week from early March thru December.** These include early morning training rides, scenic and destination rides and occasional hammerfests. We designate “pace” as the speed the ride will go on flat terrain; the average speed of the ride will generally be 2-3 mph slower than the pace. Our ride classifications indicate the style of the ride: - **C rides** are generally 30-60 miles at a 12-14 pace, stopping every 8-10 miles and are often destination-oriented - **B rides** range from 40-75 miles (or more) at a 15-18 pace, riding in a close line but usually not rotating - **A rides** will be 60-125 miles at a 19-22 pace with rotating pacelines wherever the road permits. Every spring the NYCC runs its [SIG](https://nycc.org/sigsts) (SIGnature Spring Training Program) programs in each classification. - The **C-SIG** is 8 weeks of progressive training, each ride being a bit longer and more challenging, with riders being taught both individual and group riding skills. The C-SIG takes beginning cyclists and turns them into confident group riders. - The 10-week **B-SIG** is for somewhat stronger, more experienced riders, with rides progressing to a century and classes focusing on group riding skills. - The **A-SIG** runs for 12 weeks and teaches advanced individual and group riding skills including rotating pacelines. Graduates of these, as well as other experienced riders, can take our progressive Spring Training Series in each of the 3 riding categories. Our big event, [Escape New York](https://www.enynycc.org/), takes place in September every year and includes 25, 50, 65 and 100 miles distances with fully stocked rest and lunch stops and a festival at the end. Our members also enjoy weekends away, such as Memorial Day weekend in the Berkshires, as well as our annual All-Class Ride and Newcomers Ride. We are fortunate to be able to bring our bikes on the NY subway system and the area’s commuter rail lines, making it possible to do day rides in Connecticut; New York’s Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Columbia and Orange Counties and into the Catskills; Long Island; Northern and Western New Jersey and the Jersey Shore; and regions beyond. And that’s, of course, in addition to rides within the five boroughs of New York City, which now have hundreds of miles of bike lanes. Our routes run the spectrum of beach access, pace lining, challenging climbs, historical sites and unpaved adventures. A number of area [bike shops](https://nycc.org/resources/road-bike-rentals) will rent out road bikes, so join us for a ride the next time you’re in New York. You’d be amazed at the wonderful cycling within easy distance of the Big Apple. Oh, and by the way, *New York is not flat!*undefined routes

Seattle International Randonneurs

**About Randonneuring** Randonneuring is self-supported long-distance cycling. It's a great sport for those who love to ride their bikes, explore new roads, and discover what is over the next hill. Our rides are scenic and challenging. Perhaps most enjoyable is the camaraderie among randonneurs. Randonneuring is not a race, but the time limits makes it challenging nonetheless. Randonneuring celebrates self-sufficiency. On a brevet or a permanent, you are on your own ride. The self-sufficiency of randonneuring means that you are responsible for your own pace, your own nutrition, your own repairs, and, above all, your own safety. Although other riders, or the organizers, may offer assistance, the ultimate responsibility lies with you. Randonneuring is a big tent where every rider finds their challenge. Some aspire to finish within the time limit, others try to set a personal best, and yet others want to go as fast as possible. Some concentrate on the longest distances (1000 km and beyond), others do the day rides (100, 200 and 300 km). All are randonneurs. At Seattle International Randonneurs, each rider is respected. We are all out to have fun! Randonneuring rides (called populaires or brevets) vary in length between 100 km (62 miles) and 1200 km (750 miles). Riders are given a route sheet and a control card, which they have signed at predetermined points to show that they have completed the course. Check our [calendar](https://www.seattlerando.org/content.aspx?page_id=2&club_id=928629) for upcoming populaires and brevets and come join us on a ride!undefined routes

You're also invited to come to our next club gathering to meet VBC members and enjoy some biking-related activities/discussions. We have **riders at every level** from beginners to those who log several thousand miles a year, and each of our rides have friendly and qualified ride leaders to assist you with group riding. Many of us appreciate the **social aspects of cycling** almost as much as the riding itself and many of our rides conclude with coffee, a beer or even a meal when time allows. Our signature club ride is the [Ride Around Clark County (RACC)](https://www.vbc-usa.com/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=851488&module_id=243613). It is held annually, typically during the good riding days of Summer. RACC is VBC’s charity fundraiser, and generally attracts between 500 and 1000 riders. We hope you'll join us for a truly great local ride, with routes ranging from 34 to 100 miles. [Safety](https://www.vbc-usa.com/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=851488&module_id=250561) is of primary concern in all that we do as a club. Our website emphasizes safety and offers multiple resources to serve members and features a calendar listing our group rides, events, and info on local biking activities. VBC members have access to the "[Buddies List](https://www.vbc-usa.com/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=851488&module_id=245362)," a members-only email forum for local cycling info, announcements, and impromptu rides. Members also get [discounts](https://www.vbc-usa.com/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=851488&module_id=244961) with local shops and partner businesses and have access to a large lending library of cycling books and DVDs. If you're just beginning, are a regular rider, or an experienced rider coming back after time away, **come ride with us**!undefined routes

Vermont Bikepackers

[Vermont Bikepackers](https://www.vermontbikepackers.org/) is a volunteer-operated 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a chapter of the Vermont Mountain Bike Association (VMBA). We're supported entirely by members and donors. We chart routes across the state's network of ancient unmaintained roads as well as recreational trails such as rail trails, singletrack, and town forest trails. The paths are already there -- we did not build them, but we do link them together into routes. In addition to charting routes, our members advocate to increase bikepacking access across Vermont. We strive to align with existing initiatives that have community support. We work to maintain accurate and up-to-date information, and we aim to keep healthy relationships between landowners, local trail organizations, and all trail users, including bikepackers from everywhere. Although anyone can download our routes, you can join our [VMBA chapter](https://vmba.org/join/) if you'd like to contribute to our mission and get looped into communications.undefined routes
