Frognerseteren-Majorstuen |
![]() |
This ride will take you from approximately 500 meter above sea level in Frognerseteren, down to 57 meter above sea level in Majorstuen . There are alternative routes from Frognerseteren back to the city centre, but this is the easiest with 95% downhill.
Take your time, and do not rush!
If your not in the mood for a hard exercise biking upwards to Frognerseteren, take the Metro (T-bane) Line#1 to the end station and enjoy a fantastic downhill ride to Majorstuen.
Start with exploring the Norwegian food traditions at Frognerseteren Restaurant. Traditional stuff like “rømmegrøt" (sour cream porridge), “kjøttkaker" (meat balls) and “elg" (elk) is always on the lunch menu. If lunch is too heavy, enjoy a cup of coffee and some Norwegian cakes. But most of all, enjoy the great view of Oslo and Oslofjord from Frognerseteren.
Shortly after you have started the trip downhill, you will see Midtstubakken on the left side. Midstubakken is a K90 ski jumping hill that is also used in the summertime. Continuing your descent a little bit more, you will see the “big brother” Holmenkollbakken; it has been used for competition in ski jumping since 1892, but the present ski jumping hills were modified for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championship in Oslo 2011.
You should notice that the area around Holmenkollen and Midstubakken is covered with tracks for roller skiing in summertime. It will be no surprise if there are some athletes training; you will be amazed of the speed they carry!
Please be aware that this route is very often being used for training; climbing up to Holmenkollen and returning. Take care in the turns nearby Besserud station. Do not speed when descending Ankerveien and Frognerseterveien down to Slemdal.
Skimuseet: This museum covers the history of skiing. Your entry ticket includes access to the top of Holmenkollen jump tower, which offers an excellent view of Oslo and Nordmarka.
