No specialty ride road and mountain.

Nice low traffic jaunt either direction or for an out and back. I have ridden this route on a mountain bike, and have ridden portions of it on a road bike. It is perfect for an appropriately geared gravel bike. The last couple of miles are 10 to 12% switch backs, so ride the bike that gives you the right gearing for those grades.

**If you start at the intersection of Whiteside Cove Road and NC 107, just south of Cashiers and ride to Highlands, @slice[the first 5.8 miles is paved](d,0,9232.82); @slice[then a section of gravel](d,9232.82,10759.55), followed by @slice[Horse Cove Road](d,10808.53,19396.16), which is paved the remainder of the way into Highlands.**

*I just rode the entire route on a carbon frame road bike with 28mm tires.  The gravel portion is very ridable on the road bike, but in my opinion, not a lot of fun.  It is short enough though that the overall experience is not negatively impacted.*

This is a great ride with lots of flexibility.  Ride from Cashiers to Highlands for a great lunch in one of the many terrific restaurants there.  Do it one way and get picked up for the return trip, or go out-and-back for some extra miles and climbing.

* Bonus - lunch break in Highlands and just kicking around downtown.  Love @poi[Mountain Fresh Grocery](4375499), which will be on your left if you are riding into Highlands on Horse Cove Road.
* You end up right on Main Street in downtown Highlands
* Take the out-and-back trip and stop for a cool refresher at @poi[Sliding Rock](4375498) on the Chatooga River.  Then end with the @slice[2.5 mile climb](d,0,4075.45) back up to 107.

# Important Reminders

@slice[Mile 9.2 to 11.2 you are going to see pretty constant grades of 10 to 12%](d,14851.46,18103.7), so ride the gearing that works for you.
