Whether you are a road cyclist or someone who primarily rides a beach cruiser, this route that will allow you to explore the island of Sunset Beach, make your way across the bridge and experience the close-by inland neighborhoods including our local Irish pub, Fibber McGee's, if you are so inclined.

Route Details

Whether you are a road cyclist or someone who primarily rides a beach cruiser, this is a route that will allow you to explore the island of [Sunset Beach](http://www.ncbrunswick.com/islands/Sunset-Beach), make your way across the bridge and experience the close-by  inland neighborhoods including our local Irish pub, [Fibber McGee's](http://fibbermcgeesnc.com/), if you are so inclined.

The @slice[outbound route](d,0,14765.83) starts at the @point[Sunset Beach Public Pier](d,3562.53). From there you will head North on Sunset Blvd. toward the bridge and take your first left onto North Shore Dr. West. Follow the route to the turnaround on Bay St. which will afford you a good view of the marshland on the backside of the island. At the end of Bay, make a U-turn and head back to 40th. St. and turn right. Continue on 40th. St. until you hit W. Main St. Turning right and riding the short distance to the end of W. Main St. will afford you an @point[good view from the West end of the island](d,2606.97). The 40th. Street beach access also provides @poi[access to Bird Island](5759519) via foot or beach bike. From this point, proceed along Main St. until, which will take you past your starting point to the East end of the island. From the East end, follow Canal Dr. until you hit 6th. St., where you will make a right. Follow 6th. St. until you come to the sharp left-hand bend and the @point[entrance of The Ocean Club](d,6859.51). There will be a sign there that says it is private, but as of early 2018 it is still open to the public, especially cyclists. Riding along Riverside Dr. you will come to a @poi[large live oak tree on your left that marks the access to the walkway out to a sandy knoll](5750195) where you will find a marshland overlook and picnic tables. Continuing to the end of the road will afford you a @poi[view of the East end of Sunset Beach and the West end of Ocean Isle Beach](5750196). From this point, you will follow the route back to Sunset Blvd. where you will take a right and head over the high bridge to the mainland. The bridge is very walkable or rideable because it has a 3+ foot shoulder and a high outside rail. Don't forget to stop at the @poi[top of the bridge](5750197) to catch your breath and get a good view of the Intracoastal Waterway. Coming off the bridge on the mainland side you will encounter a @point[roundabout](d,10898.55). Take your second exit off the roundabout onto Shoreline Dr. West. Follow the route through the quiet neighborhood until you reach the @point[traffic light at the intersection of Seaside Rd. SW and Sunset Blvd. North](d,14115.69). Make a left at the traffic light and make your way past the Food Lion grocery store to @poi[Fibber McGees](5750198) on your right.

Once you leave Fibber McGees the @slice[return route](d,14808.45,27697.09) will take you through Sea Trail Plantation golf community before taking you back across the bridge to your start point.  Leaving Fibber McGees, there is a @slice[walking/cycling path](d,14765.83,15146.55) that parallels Sunset Blvd. North that you can use to access Fairway Dr. East without riding on the roadway. Once on Fairway Drive East, make a right onto Wisteria Lane and then a left onto Kings Trail, which will take you to Clubhouse Rd. Clubhouse Rd. is main road the serves the Sea Trail Plantation community. Once on Clubhouse Rd. follow the route to Rice Mill Circle, which takes off to your right. Once you get back to Clubhouse Rd., turn right and @slice[follow the route to where Crooked Gulley Circle takes off to your left](d,19162.82,19826.28). Crooked Gulley Circle will bring you back to Clubhouse Rd. where you will make a right. Follow Clubhouse Rd. back past the clubhouse and continue straight until you reach your @point[right-hand turn onto Sea Trail Dr.](d,23689.31). Follow Sea Trail Dr. until it brings you back to Clubhouse Dr. where you will turn right. Clubhouse Dr. will take you to the Shoreline Dr. exit from Sea Trail Plantation. Directly across Shoreline Dr. you will see the @poi[original wooden pontoon bridge](5750199) that served as the only access to Sunset Beach until 2010. Make a left on Shoreline Dr. to access the old bridge (there is a small museum and gift shop in the old bridge tender's house)and then continue under the new bridge and make a left to bring you back to the roundabout that will take you back over the new bridge to the island and your start point.

# Important Reminders

Be careful going around the roundabout on the inland side of the Sunset Bridge. Remember traffic on the roundabout has the right of way.
