This is a great 50k bike ride that features all sorts of mixed terrain -- including pristine, paved, bike paths, crushed gravel, hard packed dirt roads, to chunky gravel. It also features an 8 mile segment of gravel from NW of Merit to Celeste.

This is a great 50k bike ride that features all sorts of mixed terrain -- including pristine, paved, bike paths, crushed gravel, hard packed dirt roads, to chunky gravel.  It also features an 8 mile segment of gravel from NW of Merit to Celeste.

The route begins at the Northeast Texas Trail (NETT) Trail Head.  You will find lots of parking in the area, if you want to drive over and give this route a try.  There's also a nice @photo[pavilion](10693618) with picnic tables at the Trail Head, called @photo[the Onion Shed](10693602).  They City of Farmersville has even installed a bike utility station, with tools and air pumps for your convenience.

As you begin the route, you'll experience @slice[a nice, wide, paved section](d,0,4860.5) of the trail for the first 3 miles.  Runners and cyclists alike enjoy using the trail in Farmersville, but there are @photo[bollards](10693610) at each of the road crossings to keep motorized traffic off of the trail.  As you head out of town, you'll find several great areas along the trail for nature picnics.  After the first 3 miles, the terrain turns to @slice[crushed gravel](d,4791.73,7764.4) for approximately 2 miles, which is very plush to ride on.   Then, the trail turns into a mix of dirt and gravel.  This area has been graded and bladed, but if it's rained recently, it can gum up the tires.

At about 7.5 miles on the trail, you'll @point[exit off of the trail](d,12192.35) and head east (right).  Shortly after you get off the trail, you'll begin what's known as the @slice[8 Mile Gravel Segment](d,12530.45,25796) -- an 8 mile stretch of gravel that twists and turns on up to Celeste.  It features some beautiful sections of country roads with @photo[awesome tree canopies](10693650), and fun bridges to cross.  This segment ends in @photo[Celeste](10693598), where you will find an Exxon Gas Station with some great treats and eats.  There are several @photo[popular murals](10693599) in Celeste that tourists love to check out.  We love them ourselves!  After passing through Celeste, you'll head west of town, onto some gravel and @photo[dirt roads](10693646).  The roads will vary throughout the year with rain and heavy vehicle traffic.  So, there may be some @photo[technical rutty sections](10696870) in this area, but if you can handle the terrain, the views are awesome!  These black dirt roads are actually some of our favorite roads to ride.  They definitely keep you on your toes.  After riding these roads for a bit, you'll then make your way back onto the NETT, and then back to the Onion Shed.

Upon returning to Farmersville, you can get you a bite to eat at a restaurant on the plaza, or stop at DQ to recharge your battery with some food.

## This route is very dificult to enjoy after recent rains. I would not attempt this if it has had significant rain in the last 48 hours.
