A fairly paved flat start for about 3 miles then onto chunky chip seal, medium limestone gravel to the standard Mississippi sandy, gravel hard pack roads of the Holly Springs National Forest. Today, it was apparent that a lot of grading has been going on as there was loose gravel and blade scrapes everywhere. There was 2900 feet total elevation and 9 miles of pavement out of 45. The town of Ashland, Mississippi, was the start and finish. The route started and ended with pavement sections and moderate elevation for the start for a change.

This route starts and ends at the Ashland, Mississippi Town Square in front of the Old Courthouse Museum. Both paved areas of road, one following the highway east and one coming in from the north on a city street.

Riding almost 4 miles of pavement with a brief gravel interlude, you'll turn north on chip seal which soon turns to limestone gravel. You'll hit Cut-Off road which is sandy clay, hard-pack, and rock. The segment is called @photo[Stacy's Mom](14390040), because, as a rider put it, *"It's got it going on"*. Next you'll run into Tubby Bottom road to Rutledge Hogan and a @photo[pavement section](14390039) with a climb passing the headwaters of the Wolf River. Back on gravel at Turkey Creek road until about mile 29 onto Hwy 370. Pavement for about 2 miles until you turn right onto Rolfe's gravel road.  Rolfe's takes you back to Tubby Bottoms road to @point[Grey Academy](d,70325.06), which takes you back to Ashland.

The route is 80% gravel with about 3000 feet of climbing, yes, in Mississippi! The roads are usually in good condition even after a rain, but can be pretty gritty. All dogs are bark and wag, and some bark more serious than others(maybe 7).

A fun challenging route in the Holly Springs National Forest.  There are no places to resupply or refresh unless you carry a water filter of purification tablets.
