The suggested route follows a series of cycling paths through alpine valleys that are little known to international tourism. Padua, a city of art and culture; Bassano del Grappa, a place of deep historical significance; Val di Sole at the foot of unforgettable Dolomite peaks; Valle Camonica, home to one of the most beautiful cycling routes in Italy; Franciacorta with its vineyards; and finally Cremona, famous for its nougat.

The itinerary proposed here allows you to travel from Venice to the heart of Northern Italy through Alpine valleys still little known among foreign cycle tourists. One of the sections was awarded the Italian Green Road Award in 2019.

From Venice-Marghera, easily reachable by train from all over Europe, the route leads to @poi[Padua](159821510), home to one of the five oldest universities in the world, the Basilica of Saint Anthony, and the world-famous Scrovegni Chapel.

Continuing north towards @poi[Bassano del Grappa](159821763), you ride almost entirely on cycle paths. The town, together with its famous bridge over the Piave River, stands as a symbol of Italy’s history during the First World War.

The route then heads into the Valsugana Valley and descends towards @poi[Trento](159840484), again mostly along cycle paths. You will ride through apple orchards and vineyards before reaching the banks of the Adige River. From here, the climb resumes towards the Val di Sole. To the left rise the first slopes of the @poi[Brenta Dolomites](159840486), while to the right the Rhaetian Alps dominate, with Mount Vioz visible in the distance.

The valley ends at the @poi[Tonale Pass](159840489), a well-known ski resort and once the border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Here you can visit museums dedicated to the 1915–18 conflict or climb towards the Presena Glacier for high-altitude hikes.

From Tonale Pass, a long descent brings you first to Ponte di Legno, then into the Upper Val Camonica down to Edolo. The gentle descent continues to Capo di Ponte, where you can admire @poi[prehistoric rock engravings](159840490), a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. The next highlight is the Pisogne–Vello section, a brand-new cycle path along the shores of Lake Iseo. Before leaving the hills behind, you enter @poi[Franciacorta](159840492), the wine region whose sparkling wines rival the most renowned Champagnes.

The last stretch takes you to @poi[Cremona](159840493), a city of art and the birthplace of one of Italy’s most famous sweets, torrone (nougat).
What to do from Cremona? The options are many. Crossing the Po River, you reach Fiorenzuola, from where you can join the Via Francigena. Heading west, the path leads through Switzerland and France to Great Britain, ending in Canterbury. Heading east and then south, it crosses Tuscany and Lazio, finishing in St. Peter’s Square in Rome.

## General Tips
* **Food**: Finding good food in Italy is nearly impossible to fail 😊
* **Accommodation**: Warmshowers, campsites, and hotels of every type.
* **Safety**: Follow the usual rules valid in the EU and North America. Keep an eye on your bike.
* **Bicycles**: Touring or gravel bikes are ideal.
* **Traffic**: Drivers don’t always show much respect for cyclists.
* **Clothing**: Very hot in summer; the maximum elevation is 1,800 m, and in bad weather temperatures can drop close to zero.
* **Communications**: English is increasingly spoken.

## Route
In my itineraries I usually suggest a stage of X kilometers with the corresponding elevation gain. Doing this for Italy, however, is much more difficult: depending on personal interests, there are countless possible detours or stops to visit historical, artistic, or natural sites. I will add some POIs along the route to provide suggestions.
