This is an excellent scenic road ride out on the eastern plains of Colorado. The roads are nice and smooth with little traffic - especially on a early Saturday morning. There is not any place to get water until you make it back into Fountain, so make sure to carry enough for you.

Route Details

The Eastern Plains of Colorado are part of the High Plains, which are the westernmost portion of the Great Plains. The region is characterized by mostly rolling plains, divided by the South Platte River and Arkansas River valleys. There are also several deciduous forests, canyons, buttes, and a few large natural lakes and rivers throughout the region.

Olympic and UCI Cyclists have been using these rolling plains for training for decades - why? because there is little traffic, the elevation profile is great for open spinning and pushing time trial times, or just a leasure stroll for that "off-day". This route is no different.

Great for most all skill levels, this ride will take you on smooth asphalt with very litle traffic (until you reach @point[Fountain](d,64502.18)). It's fairly straightforward and easy to follow with little turns, but the crème de la crème comes on the southwest side of the loop when you get onto the winding countryside. The only real traffic and navigation will be had once you get to @point[Fountain](d,64413.1) proper. This is the high-desert, so riding this in the spring & fall is best. It is also a goto place during winter when the roads are dry.

## Halfway at Hanover

@point[Hanaover, CO](d,35420.1) is half way through the ride and the @poi[Kirk Hanna Park](1523286) is a great place for a short rest stop and snack. There are restrooms, but they are not always unlocked, there is no water available.

**Time to refuel?** On the Second Sunday of every month the @poi[Hanover Fire Protection District](1525490) hosts The Hanover Fire Breakfast from 7am – 10am. Most of the food is cooked-to-order and includes burritos, french toast, biscuits & gravy, eggs, bacon & sausage, and more. The average cost of breakfast is about $5 per person with all the proceeds going to support the Hanover FPD.

## Things to consider:

* Make sure that you have plenty of water, in the first 35-40 miles, there is no reialble place along the route to get water.
* Bring something to eat; gels, power bars, etc.
* Make sure at least one in your group has a decent tools set, with extra tubes and such.
* Go early in the mornings to avoid most of the traffic and the heat.
