Route Details

Glendora Mountain Road, GMR for short, is a favorite ride for many road bikers in the Los Angeles area.  It's a 21 mile ride up to @poi[Mt. Baldy Village](1565304) and back with an optional 4 hard miles up to the ski lifts.

We usually start this ride per the route sheet, but you can start from anywhere and find your way to @slice[Glendora Ridge Road](d,0,44213.68).  Once you start climbing, there are only two stop signs between you and @poi[Mt. Baldy Village](1565304).

On your @slice[4,000' climb up](d,327.85,28861.33) the mountain you will enjoy spectacular views from a very quiet road.  The @slice[first 7 miles](d,0,11248.44) are a constant, relentless climb of around 5 to 7%.  Once you reach the maintenance shed, the road levels out a little, but mostly you will be climbing.  You might get to see some skate boarders flying down the hill, and the odd motor cycle racing through the twisties.

Enjoy the views in all directions and clean mountain air on the way up.  Once you reach scenic @poi[Mt. Baldy Village](1565304), you may be lucky enough to snag a freshly baked cinnamon roll at the lodge.  They recently installed a water dispenser on the outside wall specifically for filling your water bottles!

If you want some more climbing, continue on up to the ski lifts.  This is a 4 mile climb with about 2,000' of elevation gain.  You will see double digit gradients for nearly all of this with peaks of 15% or more.  This add-on will give you 51 miles and just over 7,000' of total climb for your ride.

**Be careful on the descent as the corners tighten up and the pavement is rough.**

The descent back to the start is quite enjoyable.  There is only 1,000' of climb on the way back and some awesone descents.  **Be careful as there are always rocks on the road.**

## Other notes:
* There are no facilities anywhere on the 21 miles up the mountain.  No water or food, however it is easy to turn around and roll back down at any point.
* Check the forecast.  It can be hot at the bottom of the mountain and cold at the top, especially at the ski lifts if you go up there.  Layer accordingly.
* Did I mention watch out for rocks on the road?
* Sometimes the road is closed to vehicles, and sometimes to bikes also, but not very often.
* You might not want to ride up the mountain in the colder months.  there could be snow at the top and it could be very cold.
