Utilising two old railway lines this route takes you on a gentle climb south out of the city before looping across to Saltford on country roads to the famous Bristol to Bath Path for a traffic free return. Great for all abilities in this direction, including kids.

Route Details

For many locals the Bristol to Bath Railway Path (B2B) is the known cycle route that takes you right out of the city from the centre on a quality surfaced green corridor. There are however many other routes suitable for cycling that are perhaps less well known or obvious.

## The Route
Starting from Bristol Temple Meads this route picks up The Whitchurch Way, following parts of the old Somerset & Dorset Railway in places, to provide an easy escape to the south of the city keeping interactions with road traffic to a minimum and providing a gentle climb out of the city. You then have quiet roads dropping down to Chew Keynsham and crossing the river before a short climb to skirt Keynsham to Saltford where you make your way to the B2B to bring you back to Temple Meads.

## Refreshments
Before joining the B2B at Saltford there is the cycle friendly pub @poi[The Bird in Hand](4099228). A short detour can also be made to the other pub, @poi[The Jolly Sailor](4099229) with garden next to The Avon locks and weir. Along the B2B you also have the @poi[Avon Valley Railway](4099230) with cafe at Bitton Station; steam days most weekends. Further along the excellent @poi[Warmley Waiting Rooms Cafe](4099231) at the old station; complete with Tardis toilet!

## Considerations
Apart from some long gentle climbs I'd say there is only one climb that may challenge the less able cyclist that being @slice[here](d,12858.3,13352.31). Preceeding that there is quite a @slice[steep descent](d,11537.41,12135.72) that if you are with kids make sure you get them to control their speed especially as they approach the T junction at the bottom.
There are a few @slice[pinch points](d,3948.24,4257.36) to consider if you are using a tag along or trailer.
