Route Details

This is a round trip ride from @photo[Union Grove Methodist Church](1740089) to Saxapahaw.  This ride is suitable for all skill levels  at any time of the year that can do the distance.  There is parking on the north (ride) side of the church and water is available by the @photo[kiosk](1740088).  There are no facilities unless the church is open.

This route is very typical of riding in Orange County.  The roads are typically passing thru a @photo[heavily wooded area](1751133) or going by a farmer’s  @photo[field](1740079) or @photo[pasture](1740083).  You will be on rolling hills during the entire ride.  None are too severe; just enough to keep the ride interesting.

# Comments about the Route

* @slice[Union Grove Road](d,0,4639.33) is heavily wooded and has a few nice rolling hills to get you warmed up.   As you pass by the farms on the right keep an eye out for llama. 
* Take care with @point[your turn ](d,5620.96)onto Bethel Hickory Grove Church Rd, as it is at the bottom of the hill and sometimes there is oncoming traffic.
* As you might expect there are several @photo[churches](1740081) along Bethel Hickory Grove Church Rd.  In fact, you will be passing quite a few churches on this ride. 
* Be careful on @slice[54](d,8574.08,9250.34) as cars can moving quite fast but there is a bike lane.  You are only on 54 for a short distance.
* Enjoy a @slice[nice long downhill](d,9222.73,10827.09) on Neville Rd.
* @slice[Old Greensboro Road](d,11972.69,23251.84) is wonderful: good surface, nice @photo[shoulder](1751159), gentle rolling hills,  and beautiful scenery.
* After coming down a long hill and crossing the bridge over the Haw River, you will encounter a @slice[deceptively long up hill](d,23331.8,26650.29).  It will have quite a different feel from the opposite side of the river.
* After you pass the @photo[Eli Whitney Recreation Center](1740076) you'll be going @slice[downhill](d,27466.33,27794.13) look for the @photo[orange warning signs](1740078) that point left. Take the turn to the right onto Whitney Road, just after those signs.
* There is a nice @photo[vineyard](1740073) on Whitney Road
* Enjoy the rest stop at the @photo[Saxapahaw river mill](1740071).  Have a cup of @photo[coffee on the patio](1747736) and @photo[look over the Haw river](1740069) as it passes under the bridge that you just crossed
* Carefully cross the intersection of @point[Salem Church Road and 54](d,40314.3).  Sometimes traffic can be moving fast.
* When you are on Mebane Oaks Rd, coming to the top of a rise, you will make a @point[sharp right turn](d,45823.76) onto Oak Grove Church Rd. It is easy to get in the zone on Mebane Oaks and miss @photo[this turn](1751104), so watch for it. 
* At the @point[next intersection](d,46882.23),  @photo[keep to your right](1751126) to stay on Oak Grove Church Road.
* There are a couple of @slice[short steep hills](d,54731.54,55978.37) on Buckhorn Rd as you approach Orange Grove.  
* As you are @slice[going up the hill](d,61671.73,62116.24) towards your turn on Rocky Ridge, you will see the @photo[Maple View Farm Ice Cream Store](1747760).  Sometimes it is hard to not stop. (Store opens at noon during ice cream season)
