The Opportunity

Our website is primarily developed with Ruby on Rails, though we have a mixed stack that incorporates a variety of languages and frameworks. Our code is deployed on a set of 10 machines, racked locally in Portland. We have continued to maintain and invest in a bare metal based deployment for many reasons, resisting the urge to move to the cloud. This has many benefits, including a serious reduction in infrastructure cost, with little downside. While we have stuck with our bare metal based deployments, we are interested in and are starting to move toward more uses of containers and related deployment software. We will likely continue to host on our own machines, but would like to modernize our methodologies of doing so. As such, we are looking to bring on an expert in system administration and deployment methodologies. We have a monolothic webapp, with several microservices implemented in various frameworks. Over the next year, we will be developing additional microservices, expanding our deployment needs. We self host our own OpenStreetMap based mapping infrastructure, which is being actively re-developed to support vector maps with extensive use of Docker. There's alot of low hanging fruits of improvement in our mature, stable infrastructure, and we want an experienced and pragmatic DevOps engineer to come in and take ownership, improve upon, and maintain our infrastructure.

Some technology that we use:

  • Ubuntu Server Edition
  • Ansible
  • MySQL / MariaDB
  • Postgres / PostGIS
  • nginx
  • Redis
  • Sphinx
  • Ceph (object store with S3 style frontend, image store for VMs)
  • Postfix (we do all email in-house, both inbound processing and outbound)
  • OpenStreetMap rendering stack (mapnik, postGIS, TileMill for style dev, soon to be replaced with a variety of vector map solutions)
  • GraphHopper for routing
  • libvirt+KVM for any virtualisation needs
  • Docker (currently our development environment, production dynamic image resizing, production vector maps)
  • Jenkins for CI and automated testing
  • Git, currently using GitHub
Our Purpose

We strive to create great cycling experiences. We want people to go on better rides, more often. We don't run any ads on the site or in the app, and are able to maintain a singular focus on serving cyclists and those who serve cyclists.

About Us

Ride with GPS is a team of nineteen professionals delivering software that supports great cycling experiences. Our website is used to plan bike routes and events, manage bike clubs, analyze ride data, and publish great rides. Our companion app is a bike computer, route navigator, and ride recorder. Within the cycling world, we’re serving weekend riders, clubs, event organizers, tour operators, and racers. By joining Ride with GPS, you will help millions of people have a great time on their bike. Our business is bootstrapped and profitable, focused on sustainable growth via user satisfaction and word of mouth advertising.

We’re bringing on several more people right now, and will be honing what we have built and taking it to the next level in terms of design & experience. 2020 will be our biggest year on every measure, and it will be a lot of fun to be a part of.

Our office is centrally located, on NE 7th and Broadway. We have standing desks, a bike repair station, and a stocked kitchenette & fridge. We all love riding bikes, from road riding to mountain biking and everything in between. We have a corporate gym membership at the nearby Lloyd Athletic Club, and several of us routinely walk there to play racquetball or work out. Lunch runs and rides are also a regular occurrence. Three of us are also avid motorcyclists. We support a healthy balanced lifestyle, we’re family-friendly (many of us have young kids), and we are all very passionate about what we do in our work.

We offer competitive salary, an excellent office environment as well as health, dental and vision insurance, and a 401k with a 10% match. You'll be equipped with a new Macbook Pro, iMac, or Linux machine, a standing desk and any other productivity tools that are needed. We strongly believe in testing our own software, and as a result are more than happy to help defray some of the costs of cycling.

What's Next?

Ride with GPS is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming workplace for all members of our staff. We believe having a diverse team makes our product and our company better, and we are working to ensure our reality reflects those ideals.
