# **The Gordon Loop**

The Gordon Loop is a route located southeast of Wichita, KS.

The @slice[Loop](d,20569.74,28834.88) is basically a destination with varying  routes to get there. The roads are usually topped with gravel that comes from the nearby rock quarry that this route passes. There is a mix of @poi[short hills](2675567), @poi[long hills](2675573) and a couple of @poi[rollers](2675574) along this route with minimal vehicular traffic. It is not uncommon to ride most of this route and only see cars that are driving on the paved sections. In the dry summer the road can become powder like , while in the wet seasons it can become a thin soupy mud spray mess.

The Gordon Loop is popular for gravel riding because it is a Flint Hills style route that is at the door step to most of the local users. It's a course that attracts novice and advance riders alike. It's short distance is attractive for the time crunched rider. Typically taking 1 1/2 to 2  hours to complete.

## Route

* Park at @poi[East Evangelical  Church](2675737)

* The @slice[first & last miles](d,0,1311.55) of this route are on Harry St which is a 55 mph road with no shoulder.

* While this route is known as the Gordon Loop, it doesn't actually go into the small farm community of Gordon. Gordon is located about 1/2 mile east of the @photo[Walnut River](2481366). Which is at the halfway point before the route begins to head back west.

* This route isn't  particularly hilly but you will experience a @photo[long climb](2481370), some @photo[rollers](2489816) and a @photo[few punchy climbs](2481367). You should expect 500 - 800 feet of total elevation gain by the end of the ride.

## Notes

* This is a year-round route. Keep in mind that it is gravel and can become muddy during heavy rains.

* The recommended bike would be either a MTB or CX style bike with at least a 32mm tire.  Anything less and you'll have a very rough ride and possibly experience tire issues. 
One or two hydration bottles should be sufficeint for this ride. Total time for this ride is typically 2 hours.

* This is a great route for all fitness levels. It is a very popular route that is used to introduce cyclist to gravel riding.

* Food, and other services are not available on this route. If needed, @poi[water](2675748) can be found at the@poi[ County Maintenance barn](2675748) in Gordon. It is a frost free hydraunt in front of the walk in door to the building.

## CAUTIONS

* This route crosses four busy paved roads and 1 busy Railroad. @point[Pawnee St](d,2934.79),  @point[SW Butler Rd](d,7735),  @point[SW 150th](d,15812.09), @point[BNSF railroad](d,16075.12) and @point[Salter Rd](d,19046.91).

* Remember that the first and last miles of this route traverse along a shoulderless 55 MPH roadway. Hi Vis taillights are suggested.

* I've only experienced aggressive dogs in @point[one area](d,17647.26). They've never appeared to want to bite and only chase. Having an encounter with them is hit and miss.
