## Overview
The route @point[starts in downtown Reno](d,6.21) and heads east to the end of the Truckee River Bike Path, then flips around and rides back west to Verdi.  This is the most traveled recreational route in the area and is mostly flat with a @slice[few climbs](d,32917.55,48032.7) going to Verdi.

**The route to the west has a little traffic. The route to the east takes you through downtown Reno, where there is some traffic, then to the bike path which has no vehicle traffic.**

[The Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway (TPB)](http://www.tpbikeway.org/), founded by Janet Phillips in 2003, is a non-profit organization.  Their goal is to develop a bikeway from @poi[Lake Tahoe](3052451) along the Truckee River to @poi[Lake Pyramid](3052452), 116 miles.  The TPB has earned national awards, and was recently recognizes as on of the top 10 things to do in Reno.

*The ride may be done in halves, to the east along the flat Truckee River bike path, or west to Verdi, where the climbing is located.*

## Leaving Reno
The approximately 12 mile route between Reno and Sparks is a favorite of Reno/Sparks cyclists and is a combination of bike lane along paved roads and a paved bike/walking path.  Most of the paved bike path was developed by the cities of Reno, Sparks and Washoe County.

@slice[The TPB runs right through downtown Reno along the Truckee River.](d,0,1086.89)  Some of it is on the shoulder of the main streets of downtown and riders need to be cautious of traffic. @slice[On the eastern edge of downtown the TPB follows the Truckee river on a scenic paved bike path which travels through several parks that are adjacent to the river.](d,841.5,4182.17)

Upon reaching the @point[end of the paved path](d,13412.01), you'll turn around and head west, back towards Verdi.

## Back to Reno
The @slice[TPB between Verdi and West Reno](d,49142.38,65591.03) is a bike lane primarily on Old US 40.  The bike lane is in good condition.

There are two short sections of paved bike path between Verdi and downtown Reno. One connects Verdi to Mogul and the other follows the river between West Reno and downtown Reno.

The TPB built the section of paved bike path connecting @slice[Verdi to Mogul](d,55827.12,57033.8).  It was completed in 2005 and turned over to the City of Reno. Prior to its completion, cyclists traveled on I-80 between Verdi and Mogul. The Verdi-Mogul path opened a safe and popular connector. There were over 38,000 bike trips recorded, on the path, in just 8 months.
