Day #6. Griffin Lake Campground to Forsyth Park in Savannah. Final push into Savannah. Easy day in the saddle with a few sights along the way.

Route Details

Leave Griffin Lake Campground along the dirt road across the dam. The first stop is Springfield, county seat of Effingham County, with its recreated pioneer homestead.

The route continues across Ebenezer Creek.  Pause here to ponder the sad story of the newly freed slaves following in the wake of the Union 14th Corps. The army pulled up their pontoon bridges across the creek as quickly as they had passed, leaving the freedmen stranded on the opposite bank.  The crush at the creek bank pushed many into the swollen stream.  They drowned.

After the Creek, visit Ebenezer community, the site of the Lutheran settlement of Austrian emmigrants granted this spot by James Oglethorpe (Georgia's founder). Many folks living in Effingham County trace their roots to these early settlers.  The rider may notice all the Lutheran churches scattered about in Effingham County. Check out the rooster windvane on the church steeple at Ebenezer.  The two holes are bullet holes from bored Redcoats on guard duty when the British occupied Savannah during the American Revolution .  At Ebenezer roll down to the Savannah River to check out the landing.

From Ebenezer travel through Rincon then into Port Wentworth. From Port Wentworth the rider will share the road with some large trucks as you roll past Georgia's container port and heavy industry.  Georgia's container port is the largest single container port in North America.

Enter Savannah via the Old Augusta Road then finally along the Old Louisville Road to the bluff where historic Savannah is located. Take your time rolling through Savannah's historic bike/ped friendly wards. Watch out for pedestrians and other cyclists.  As you finish your ride in Forsyth Park notice the bench where Forrest Gump told his life story.
