Cutting through the heart of the inner eastern suburbs of Melbourne, this informal bike route is a great way for commuters and utilitarian riders to get into the CBD from Box Hill in only 15 kilometres.

Route Details

This is a useful and relatively low-stress route for riders getting from the inner eastern suburbs into the CBD. As an added bonus, there are lots of interesting things along the way!

Route Description

Starting in Box Hill, the route weaves through some side streets to cross Elgar Road and continue along the railway line to the Hamilton Street Shops in Mont Albert. This is a great little shopping strip with cafes, grocery shops, bakeries and other retail facilities.

Between here and Kew, follow Mont Albert Road and Wellington Street. Both have painted on-road bike lanes, but there are some hairy sections (such as the Balwyn Road and Burke Road intersections.

Follow Stevenson Street up into the Yarra River parklands and enjoy the sweeping views to the south and south-west. The bushland around here makes for a very relaxing commute!

Continue across Collins Bridge (soon due for replacement) to cross the River. Then use Gipps Street to join the Wellington Street bike lanes in Collingwood. These are separated from traffic, which is terrific!

The final stretch takes you across Victoria Parade, down Lansdowne Street and onto Albert Street. This will take you to the eastern side of the CBD where you can then make your own way to wherever you need to go!

Notes

  • Be aware of heavy and frequently-stopping traffic along Mont Albert Road during school times.
  • There are some variations that you can use along this route, including turning left at Gisbourne Street if heading along Collins Street.
  • There are quite a few drink taps and toilets along the way that are within easy reach from this route.
  • This route is not for the inexperienced cyclist, but if you are reasonably confident on the road this should not be too difficult. Mont Albert Road and crossing Elgar Road are probably the most dangerous sections. The rest is pretty low-stress.
