A ride that centers around the Blackfoot River, and takes you into remote country along forgotten gravel roads.

Route Details

A moderate mixed-surface ride that takes you up the Blackfoot River Corridor, into the Gold Creek drainage, up and through the mountains and back down to the river before descending back to town. You will be passing through very remote country without cell service. A great ride for taking a dip in the river during the heat of summer.

# Route

* @poi[Park at Milltown State Park](7878628), or ride over from Missoula.
* Start by heading up HWY 200 on pavement before crossing the river on the @point[footbridge](d,4977.02) over to Cambridge Road.
* You will climb up into the @slice[Gold Creek Drainage](d,15796.87,27578.4), an area that is designated public land through the Nature Conservancy.
* You will ride alongside the glorious @slice[Blackfoot River](d,46633.49,69155.99), marvel at the @slice[incredible canyon](d,22498.94,27008.04) that Gold Creek has carved, and enjoy lonesome and desolate double track that has been long forgotten by motorists. You will head back to town on @slice[Johnsrud road](d,50951.45,64103.78), a popular recreation area, and a great place to park the bike and go for a swim in the summer months.
* @slice[Tough but relatively short climb up into the Gold Creek area](d,15919.91,21999.61). You will do some more moderate climbing to get @slice[up and out](d,28077.81,33215.82) of the drainage before enjoying a long and mellow descent for the rest of the ride.
* @slice[HWY 200](d,964,15730.15) can be a busy road but there is a huge shoulder for riding.

# Notes

* Summer or fall is the best time to ride, after snow melts at higher elevations
* Gravel or Cross bike recommended
* Suggested that you have experience descending on gravel, as the road surface varies quite a bit on this route, and can be dangerous if you are inattentive.
* Bring your filter, as water is available at the @poi[Gold Creek crossing](7878629), and @poi[Belmont Creek crossing](7878630).  There are no services along this route, so bring whatever food you think you will need.
