Get a taste of the forests without having to get too far off the highway. Minimal HWY 101 riding in this loop starting and ending at famous Battle Rock Wayside. Great intro to the hills and forests around here complete with scenic Pacific Ocean views. Expect gravel, rough asphalt, smooth pavement, and even some grassy sections. This 14.5 mile ride has almost 2000' of climbing and will surely get your muscles working.

**Looking for a mixed terrain route along the Southern Oregon Coast that's close to amenities but with that rural mountain feel?**

The China Mountain Mixer is true mix of pavement and gravel forest roads. There are steep climbs, ocean views, and rolling blacktop. Riders should be fairly capable of navigating the forest roads, riding alongside Highway 101, steep climbing and descending, and riding loose gravel. This route is great all year long for adventure enthusiasts who don't mind the temperatures ranging from hot and sunny to cold coastal rain.

Start and end at @poi[Battle Rock Wayside](5203520) which has a visitors center, bathrooms, water fill, and ample parking. The ride starts out on winding pavement as you climb out of Port Orford by crossing Highway 101 to access @slice[Cemetery Loop Road](d,108.84,2360.19). Enjoy a tree-lined ride on a narrow, shoulder-less, paved road before winding down back to @point[Highway 101](d,2360.19).

Turn left onto Highway 101 and continue your ride along the coastline. Be sure to pull over at the view points for @photo[pictures](3167386), whale watching, and @poi[scenic views](5474111). Once you come around the @point["Windy Corner"](d,4710.47) on 101 look for a small post and blue marker on the left side of the highway which designates @point[The Oregon Coast Route](d,6158.2).

There is a small road that ends at a @poi[gate](5474114) where hikers and dog walkers enjoy an easy coastal "trail". From here the pavement turns to mixed gravel, decaying old road, and grassy sections. This unique section is part of the Old Coast Road which used to be the main thoroughfare along the southern coast. You'll definitely want to take pictures and stop for a snack at the @poi[view points](5474113) on this section. The "road" @slice[descends down](d,8780.25,9724.2), turning back to pavement, into [Humbug Mountain State Park](https://oregonstateparks.org/index.cfm?do=parkPage.dsp_parkPage&parkId=40). **Please watch for pedestrians along this popular section.** The @photo[pavement](4654352) can be very slippery during rainy weather. There are restrooms, showers, and water at the campground.

The route continues on the pavement out of the State Park, stay left as you exit and take the @point[sharp turn](d,10122.77) onto the gravel road at the entrance to Humbug Mountain State Park. Here's where your legs are truly tested as you climb a @slice[steep, switchback road](d,10122.77,12059.76) out of the canyon through @photo[Big Leaf Maples, giant Spruce and Doug Fir trees](3167387). Continue climbing and watch for logging trucks and tourist traffic as you make your way up China Mountain Road.

Reaching the top you emerge into the sunshine and recently logged acres of coastal forest. There are @photo[peeping views of the ocean](4654353) and summer weather can be 5-10 degrees warmer up top. @poi[Stay left](5474115) on the main gravel road and follow the main route along the ridge tops and industrial logging operations. You will be gifted with gorgeous ocean and forest vistas and @photo[views of Humbug Mountain](3167385). The loose gravel gives way to pavement as you @slice[descend back towards the coastline](d,18252.35,20680.96). Be careful of the fast speeds you can attain on the @photo[gravel descents](4654355). Watch for traffic on this one-lane blacktop as you are rewarded with fast, sweeping turns.

Eventually your ride emerges where it began, back on Highway 101 near Hubbard Creek. You can continue onto @point[Highway 101](d,2507.59) and follow the shoulder and ocean back to Port Orford and your @poi[vehicle](5203520), or go back the way you came around scenic @slice[Cemetery Loop Road](d,20956.34,23241.13).

Conclude your ride with some food or drinks from @poi[Redfish](5474119) or any of the other great restaurants in town. Add in a short out and back to the Port of Port Orford if you want a fun, scenic cool down. Or combine this ride with the Port Orford Road Loop.
