Route Details

Donner Pass is one of the classic climbs in the Tahoe area with pristine granite outcroppings and eye-popping views. I've chosen to start the route at the head of the Legacy Trail in Glenshire, a community just to the east of Truckee. Of course this route could just as easily start at Cisco Grove just off Interstate 80.

The Legacy Trail is quite new and boasts buttery smooth pavement. Along the way you will pass through Truckee, gateway to the Tahoe's North Shore. Donner State Park is an interesting stop where you may pick up a tip or two on wilderness survival, pioneer style. Donner Lake is the little sister to Tahoe, but without the huge crowds.

Once you start the climb in earnest you will marvel at the crystal clear views. Topping out at over 7,000' is the Donner Pass Bridge, which demands a quick stop just to admire your accomplishment. Once you pass Sugar Bowl Ski Resort your route will begin to roll before dropping down to Cisco Grove. Get a quick refreshment at the store and turn it around for another climb back up to the pass.

At this altitude snow and ice can always be an issue, but US 40 is normally kept clear when conditions permit. That being said, this is an alpine enviornment. Check road conditions before attempting this climb.

A nice loop to add a few miles is the loop around Serene Lakes. At mile 13.5 you will see a flashing light; take Soda Springs Rd to the left and use RwGPS to cobble together a few extra miles. This is a very quiet addition to the ride.

I learned the hard way a few years ago...mountain weather can change in a flash. Be prepared to encounter the unexpected.

Lots of services are available on this ride, but bring adequate food and hydration materials. The sun gets pretty hot up here, even when temperatures are cool...don't be fooled. Stay hydrated.
