Time Warp’s reputation precedes it, with visiting riders putting the trail at the top of their list. Don’t just jump into this ride, however, as it is both physically and technically demanding, with steep, loose descents and plenty of pedaling to get there. Warm up on the other local rides before putting this gem into the rotation so that you can fully enjoy the trail, stunning scenery, and remote feel.

## Route Details
Contact Mt. Ashland Adventures for a shuttle ride up to the trailhead; they help maintain the trail and will know if the conditions are prime. From the parking lot and head west on the doubletrack (NRDR20-300) for about two miles. If you need a quick orientation, just ask the shuttle drivers; they are more than happy to get you headed in the right direction. @slice[The doubletrack does climb about 400’](d,0,2879.04), but the views will keep you distracted.

The doubletrack ends at the top of @slice[Time Warp](d,2879.04,9237.08), where it’s time to cinch down all the straps, get your thoughts in order, and give a firm grip on the bars as you quickly drop into beautiful alpine terrain. Keep your attention focused on the trail, though, as rocky segments pop out of nowhere and if you hit the deck here you’re hours from help. As you start to feel the flow the trees open up and you can get in the groove as you descend 2,600 feet over four miles of sheer joy.

At the bottom of Time Warp you’ll have a relatively flat transfer of five miles before you take a quick jaunt on the top of @slice[Marty’s Trail](d,16741.9,17722.22), a jumpy, black-diamond trail that is typically less crowded than the adjacent Catwalk Trail. Don’t get lulled in, though, as you need to bang a @point[right on Cut Over Trail](d,17833.11), which, although hard to spot, has a flavor of its own with a fast, tight tread. Cut Over tees into lower Catwalk, and you’ll turn left to keep heading downhill. If you’re not feeling up to hitting the jumps on Marty’s you can easily avoid it and instead take Catwalk all the way down.

Either way, @slice[Catwalk](d,17722.22,19823.42) is a high-speed blast, with rock gardens, doubles, and side-hill exposure to keep you honest. Dropping 1,000’ in two miles, the trees seem much closer to your handlebar than you’d like when you’re speeding through G-outs or popping off the numerous booters. Try to hop on the wheel of a local and see if you can keep up!

Catwalk ends at Toothpick Trail, where you’ll go left and then roll to the start of Caterpillar for more high-speed twists and turns. The fun isn’t nearly over, though, as you’ll then ride the newly redeveloped @slice[Jaberwocky Trail](d,22050.64,25457.97), which is a testament to the persistence and skill of local trail builders, with wide-open rollicking through the forest as you approach town. Get it out of your system, because once it’s over you’re back on mixed-use trails as you roll through the neighborhood.

You’ll end right in historic downtown Ashland, with numerous restaurants, cafes, and brewpubs. Grab a sandwich and coffee if you’re planning on going for a second lap. If you’re done for the day, pull up a chair at one of the many outdoor seating areas to enjoy the sun and people-watching.

## Riding Season
The lower portion of the trail system enjoys a long season thanks to the dry Southern Oregon climate. The opening of the upper trailhead at Mt. Ashland ski resort depends on the snowpack, which varies greatly year-to-year. The mountain biking season is typically late spring through late fall; early-winter dustings at higher elevations are prized as they can melt quickly and bring back the tack.

The network is designed to provide something for everyone, with fun, flowy trails down low and rocky, techy trails up high. You can choose your own adventure depending on your skill level, timeframe, and desire for climbing. If you’re with the family then multiple laps down low is your game; if you want to test your ability to navigate narrow, exposed tread then you’ll want to head to the upper routes. Most of the trails are directional which means that even if the trailhead is crowded you’re unlikely to encounter many people once you start climbing. Afterwards, food and drinks are mere minutes away in Rogue River, as well as a quick dip in the namesake waterway. (less)
