Route Details

The ride starts from the magnificent [Parador de Mojacar](http://www.parador.es/es/paradores/parador-de-mojacar) (this is definetely worth staying at if you can) - ample parking is available all along the beach front in @point[Mojacar Playa](d,82.06) and there are a great many cafes/bars & restaurants where a pre-ride coffee and breakfast can be found. 
After what seems miles of 'the stretch' along Mojacar's seafront, passing bar & restaurant after bar & restaurant we finally reach the final hotel and leave the resort. This is the main tourist resort in Almeria and there is ample evience of it here, golf course, campsite and residential developments are passed before the road spikes up. This is a taste of things to come, this is not a flat seaside ride, small coastal inlets mean the road is either going up or down.Very little flat for the between Mojacar and @point[Agua Amarga](d,29149.76) and it is not long before we reach the climb of @point[Sopalmo](d,11432.56). Then there is a mirador overlooking the bay of Carboneras that is a photo that almost every cyclist who has ridden by has taken! @photo[Sopalmo](773277) - amazing engineering! @slice[It is a good to ride down (and up) as it looks.](d,12880.2,14505.03)
We then reach @point[Carboneras](d,19757.66) for the first time and on this instance we recommend avoiding the sea front and passing straight through and heading on to Agua Amarga. Again the road maintains its lumpy nature, sapping climbs and sharp descents, hugging the seaside on our left shoulder. Then after as steep drop down to sea level we reach Agua Amarga, a sleepy little white village nesting in a cove. There are three excellent eateries here and except for holidays and Sundays they are usually not too busy - the bar in the square is one of the nicest places in all of Almeria to sit and enjoy some tapas, seafood and a cold drink.@photo[ Bar Agua Amarga](773283) 
After this we head inland and @slice[climb up about a 150 meters over the next ](d,29722.81,38348.4) 10 kms before the a bit a of a drag up to the highest point of the ride at @point[Gafares, 247m](d,44766.55). As a *camino rurale* the road surface is a bit rough in places but it is totally devoid of traffic, only the occassional agricultural vehicle passes us. At the end of a fast descent back towards the sea we come accross a piece of unusual architectural design - we call it *@photo[Casa Scallop](773278)* 
We then have a small section of rambla to cross before returning to Carboneras - if you didn't eat in Agua Amarga then detour off the route down to the beachside promenade and one of its many outstanding *chiringuitos* for a plate of prawns, calamari or grilled fish. @photo[*playa de Carboneras*](773275) Then it is back up the stunning climbs to Sopalmo which looks much more imtimating from the bottom than it really is and pretty much downhill all the way back to Mojacar.
Just a word of warning about coast rides in Almeria - it can be (and often is) windy, and can be very windy so be prepared for a hard ride when by the sea!
