Epic Rides in an Epic Valley
Farmers produce more than 170 crops and livestock items throughout the Willamette Valley – and this ride offers ample opportunities to experience some of the region’s bounty all year long.
Farmers produce more than 170 crops and livestock items throughout the Willamette Valley – and this ride offers ample opportunities to experience some of the region’s bounty all year long.
The ride starts at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, home to a variety of military and civilian aircraft. Most famously, the museum houses Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose – the largest wooden plane ever constructed.
From the eastern edge of McMinnville, the ride heads south for 13 miles before arriving at Grand Island. The cottonwood, maple, and ash forests on Grand Island once covered riverbanks throughout the region; watch (or listen) for birds that frequent this area, including bald eagles, yellow warblers, and spotted sandpipers.
Along the way – and on Grand Island – you’ll pass countless farms and markets growing corn, tomatoes, berries, melons, and more; if open, stop in at some of the farm stands for a fresh, cool treat.
For something a little more substantial, Bob's Grand Island Deli and Grocery sells grab-and-go deli items, as well as house-made sandwiches, burritos, barbecue, soups, and more.
On your way back, the ride stops in the charming community of Dayton. The town’s historic Courthouse Square Park offers plenty of shade (thanks to a regal oak grove) and hosts an informational cycling kiosk with local routes and a downtown map. (Public restrooms are available at the park, as well.)

You’ll want to keep a few things in mind when planning to ride this route:
If starting from downtown McMinnville, pay close attention to hourly parking limits. If necessary, consider parking a bit further from the downtown core. Note that there is a charge for visiting the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, which accepts cash and credit cards. If visiting, feel free to park at the museum before setting out on your ride. This route is accessible year-round, though you may want to prepare for snow and ice in winter – and rain is possible all year long. Check the forecast before riding to ensure the safest possible conditions. This route follows established roadways, most quiet and in low-traffic areas, but you may encounter a few blind corners; proceed with caution around the curves. Wineries and other attractions may keep limited hours; call ahead to ensure they’ll be open if you’d like to visit. Keep in mind that you’re riding at your own risk; take precautions, and be mindful of other users on the road at all times.
