The Phantom Canyon loop utilizes historic railroad lines and stagecoach roads for a 100 kilometer route through the mining country of Teller County. Along with Gold Camp, these routes make up the majority of the Gold Belt Byway’s gravel roads.

The route begins in Cañon City, following an old old rail line to the mining town of Cripple Creek. Though the @slice[climb](d,7979.31,48415.44) up the canyon keeps at a gentle grade, those who are not accustomed to Colorado's thin air might struggle when approaching the max elevation of 9,500 feet. After resupplying in the historic towns of @poi[Victor](38605892) or @point[Cripple Creek](d,60608.16), the ride rewards you with a @slice[rowdy descent](d,60513.22,79396.29) back on Shelf Road.

# Important Reminders

The Phantom Canyon loop travels through remote country with scant cell reception. Because of this, it is always smart to be prepared in the case of a mechanical or medical emergency. Weather can come in fast and summer temps can reach triple digits. Plan to pack all your water even though you can (usually) resupply in Victor and Cripple Creek.
