The Atokal Loop so named because it's the Lakota Loop in reverse... is an awesome albeit slightly challenging loop. Even though it only gains about 2,200' in its 45 miles, many of the hills are short but steep.

# Atokal (or Lakota in Reverse)
The great part about this ride is that it's really a two for one... just reverse the route (or follow Lakota [here](http://ridewithgps.com/routes/4836521)). This is yet another CulpeperCycling.com favorite ride since it has some great scenery, features awesome roads with little traffic and presents a nice challenge.

We start this ride from downtown Culpeper and more specifically from @poi[Culpeper Cheese Co](1084236) since it's ther perfect spot for that post ride snack and a few beers.

The ride heads out of town on Sperryville Pike (522) and around Culpeper's brand new round-a-bouts. About 1.5 miles after the traffic circle, you make a right onto Woodland Church Rd.  Woodland Church Rd is pretty much a gradual uphill but as you crest the final hill keep a sharp eye out, since you might be greeted by a Jack Rusell terrier that lives in @photo[this house](799377).  He doesn't bite but does like to chase and run along side of cyclists.

At the end of Woodland Church you make lefts onto Cherry Hill and then Eggbornsville Rd.  Begin moving to the left as you pass the pond on your right so you can make the left turn onto Chestnut Fork which you then follow until the end and make the right onto Auburn Rd.

Auburn Road is a nice two mile stretch of road with few cars and decent pavement.  You know you'll be getting to the end though when you can see Rt 29 off your right shoulder. Continue across Alanthus Rd (which becomes Fleetwood Heights Rd) and past the Brandy Station fairgrounds (which by the way is another great ride @poi[starting location](1084266)). At the end make the right onto Beverly Ford Rd and cross over Rt 29.

On the other side of 29, make the immediate left after the train tracks and follow to the end with a slight right onto Kellys Ford Rd.  This section of Kellys Ford is super fast now that it has been repaved. After about 2 miles you will come to a stop sign, be sure to make the left onto Newbys Shop Rd and begin heading into Remington.  As you enter Remington be sure to stop at @poi[Andes Market](1084237) and pick up some water and food for the remainder of the ride.

Once headed out of town and across Rt 29 again you have a nice 7.5 mile stretch with few cars and great scenery.  Be on the lookout for this @photo[house](799541)... it kind of reminds the locals of something Frank Lloyd Wright would have built.

## Here come the hills
Be sure you get a good dig in as you make the final climb up Lakota Rd to Ryland Chapel since there's a competitive Strava segment there.

Once you make the left onto Ryland Chapel Rd your greeted with some fantastic views, challenging hills and empty roads.  Enjoy the ride as this is one of our favorites sections to ride!!

As you make your way back to Culpeper on Zion Church Rd you will eventually make a right back onto Chestnut Fork Rd where you pretty much follow the same route you came out on back into town.

## Post Ride Fun
Once back in town take advantage of wonderful downtown Culpeper.  Head over to Culpeper Cheese Company for a few beers or grab a nice meal at Fotis Restaurant.  We love our little town and we know you will too.

This is one of our personal favorite rides. Its just long enough to "get away" but short enough your family won't miss you. Plus there's enough challenge in there so you deserve a beer afterwards. And in our opinion this ride has some of the best views around, there's a reason the Tour de Madison uses many of these same roads. (less)
