A 250 mile Bikepacking loop that starts and ends in Truckee CA. The route combines The Tahoe, Sierra and Plumas National Forests and travels to the Northernmost edge of Sierra Nevada and back to the famous town of Truckee just north of Lake Tahoe.
For the optimal experience, the route is best broken up into 5 days at about 60 miles and 6000k of vert per day and can be done on a larger tire gravel bike or hardtail mountain bike.
The best time of year is mid summer to late fall, due to snowpack. Check the weather window, it gets hot in places and can be freezing at night.
The route is rugged, remote, challenging and awe inspiring but very doable logistically with plenty of camping, resupplies and water along the route.
The route was inspired by the Connected Communities Project. The Connected Communities Project aims to stimulate the economies of rural communities in the Lost Sierra by improving trail access and connectivity and encouraging diverse user types to explore and recreate on public lands by linking 15 mountain towns by trails. The Sagebrush to Snowbanks route takes in some of the best of the northern Plumas and Southern Lassen County areas, and at 137 miles, it’s one you can knock it out in a long weekend. While much of this area has been impacted by fire in recent years, there are still so many beautiful areas that either did not burn recently or are rolling through the various stages of recovery, each with its beauty and intrigue. The route features plenty of water resupplies, smooth rails to trails conversion trails, quaint historic Northern Sierra Towns, big and small, and a remote feeling that you have the world all to yourself.
The highlights of the trip are riding around Lake Almanar, the Biz Johnson Trail, camping at Antelope Lake, and riding back into the High Sierra towns of Taylorsville, Crescent Mills, and Greenville, one of the towns that were completely wiped out in the Dixie Fire.
Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship works to promote revitalization of these small mountain communities through trail development and outdoor recreation, then encouraging good people to come and enjoy it all. Follow their work and get involved at sierratrails.org or @sierratrails on social media.
