Imagine starting your pedals at the salt-sprayed shores of the North Shore, near the surf and shoreline ambiance of Sunken Meadow State Park. Your journey stretches across Long Island, weaving through hidden greenbelts, forests, dirt and paved multi-use paths, quiet roads, possibly even sandy or beach-y patches — a little bit of everything Long Island has to offer between sound and bay. Over a solid few hours on the saddle, the landscape shifts from coastal pine and sea-breeze to interior woodlands, suburban edges, and eventually down to the serene waters of the South Shore at Heckscher State Park.

By ride’s end, as you roll into Heckscher, there’s a sense of crossing worlds — from north to south, salt to bay, one shore to another. It’s a traverse not just of geography, but of Long Island’s varied moods: from coastal calm to inland greenbelt wilderness to quiet suburban backroads.

If you squint (or snap a wide-lens shot), this ride captures––in a single day––the essence of what makes biking on Long Island unique: variety, unpredictability, and that sweet payoff when the miles and sweat lead you to water again.

The route has a mix of multi-use trails, from sandy to unpaved surfaces, paved sections, and some road. You start on trail, then ride dirt, then pavement, and a bit of beach.

The route being 38 miles. For many riders, especially those on gravel, fat, or MTB bikes, a comfortable pace (with a few stops) yields ~4-5 hours to complete.
