This is a nice route to ride on weekends and holidays. Start and finish at SouthWest Bicycles in Peoria / Arrowhead shopping area and ride a combination of multi-use paths and bike lanes to the AZ State Capitol area and Wesley Bolin Plaza. The ride will take you through some of the historic district homes of Phoenix.

## Description
This is a great route to use to travel to Downtown Phoenix, the @photo[State Capitol](904498) and @poi[Wesley Bolin Plaza](1185259)

This route utilizes the AZ Canal Multi-Use path. Caution should be used when travelling into the underpasses to watch for debris and people. You will travel from @photo[SouthWest Bicycles](904202) on the multi-use path.  @poi[Rose Mofford Park](1185026) affords a nice opportunity to stop for a quick break for restrooms and water at approximately mile 9.  At approximately 10 miles you will cross over the multi-use path on the @photo[15th Ave bridge](904177) and head south on 15th Ave to @photo[Encanto Park](904166).  As you travel south on 15th Ave and 5th Ave you will ride past some of the older, historic neighborhoods in Phoenix, one of the oldest city parks and into the @photo[heart of Phoenix](904148) on a portion of the [Phoenix Sonoran Bikeway](http://azbikeped.org/images/SonoranBike.pdf).

## Points of Interest
* @poi[Encanto Park](1184933), one of Phoenix's oldest city parks where you can and enjoy the @photo[mature vegetation and peaceful lagoon](904166). This will also be your last restroom stop until you reach approximately mile 37 at Saguaro Ranch Park.
* @photo[Historic First Chuch](904165)
* @poi[Wesley Bolin Plaza](1185259) You will want to give yourself adequate time to 
visit the multitude of memorials, statues and plaques honoring those who have served AZ and from AZ throughout history. The World War II Memorial displays @photo[guns](904504) from the USS AZ and the USS Missouri and the @photo[anchor](904499) from the USS AZ. The @photo[Korean War Memorial](904495). The @photo[Viet Nam Veterans Memorial](904152) and the @photo[Iraqi Conflict Memorial](904153) honor those men and women from AZ who served and gave their all. Many other smaller memorials honor those who helped shape AZ.
* The @photo[AZ State Capitol building](904498) is noteworthy as copper (one of AZ 5 C's) encases the Capitol Dome. You may learn about Arizona's "C's" [here](http://www.azlibrary.gov/arizona-almanac/five-c).
* The @photo[Maryland Avenue Bridge](904178) is a fun one to travel over I-17 on your way back to the start.
* The @photo[47th Ave bridge](904198) connects 47th Ave to the AZ Canal multi-use path. This provides an alternative route if you want to head north on 47th Ave to the canal to return.
* @photo[Saguaro Ranch Park](904181) is one of Glendale's gems. There are plenty of picnic tables, water and restrooms for the cyclist in need of a quick (or longer) break.

## Important Reminders

During normal working hours (M-F), the Phoenix downtown area is host to a LOT of traffic. This ride is highly recommended for weekend or holiday riding when the buisness traffic is at a minimum, or non-existant.

Always ride the AZ Canal Multi-use path with caution. The path is utilized by many individuals including cyclists, walkers, runners, children and skateboarders. Extra caution is advised when entering and travelling through the underpasses because there is often debris lying in the underpass.

During the summer months when temperatures can reach 110+ degrees, make sure you take plenty of water/hydration with you and start your ride at day-break. You may refill water at most of the city parks. For cold water, you will need to stop at a convenience market that you may pass along the way.

This route offers gradual inclines for the first 30 miles and sweet downhills nearly all the way back to the start. It utilizes city streets some with bike lanes and some without, but all streets are well-known bike routes. You will experience some beautiful desert views on your way to New River and across the Sonoran Desert preserve on Dove Valley Rd. (less)

This is a nice easy ride utilizing the Rio Vista Park multi-use trail system and the relatively quiet, wide streets of Sun City. With only 200+ feet of elevation change, this route is suitable for most any rider. You can even make a stop for a treat at the New York West Bakery - one of the favorites in the area! Pick up a bakery treat, or bring some of their homemade bread home for later! (less)
