This is a nice easy ride utilizing the Rio Vista Park multi-use trail system and the relatively quiet, wide streets of Sun City. With only 200+ feet of elevation change, this route is suitable for most any rider. You can even make a stop for a treat at the New York West Bakery - one of the favorites in the area! Pick up a bakery treat, or bring some of their homemade bread home for later!

Route Details

This route begins and ends at @poi[Rio Vista Park](1257347), a regional park in Peoria, AZ. There is plenty of parking close to the beautiful Rio Vista Multi-use path that follows the edge of New River wash. @photo[New River wash](988973) is usually dry, but after rains, it can flow and the water will potentially be flowing over the multi-use path. With just over 250 feet elevation change over the 24 miles, this route is suitable for most any rider.

When you begin your ride, you will head south on the @photo[Rio Vista park trail](988970). Stay alert to your surroundings and you may spot some local wildlife including quail, roadrunners, coyotes, javalina or rabbits in addition to several birds. During the Spring, the trail will be @photo[lined with blooming desert plants](988978). The trail takes you under all the major cross streets, so you won't have vehicular traffic along the multi-use trail portion of this route.

When you exit the path at Olive Ave, you will head slightly west then north through the quiet, wide streets of Sun City. Make sure you take a little extra time to make a stop at the @photo[New York West Bakery](988959) for one of their delectable fresh-made @photo[bakery treats](988975). You may want to take along your pannier or back pack and bring home a loaf or two of their delicious locally-made bread! This stop makes the whole ride worthwhile!

After you've had your fill of sweets, you will be energized to head north through more quiet, @photo[wide streets](988965) of Sun City to @photo[Alta Vista](988979) @poi[neighborhood park](1257351). The park is a nice stop along the route for restrooms and water.

For the next couple of miles, you will be riding in the bike lane on Lake Pleasant @slice[Parkway](d,24681.66,26903.83). Caution should be used along this stretch because traffic can be heavy.

Watch for a break in the traffic to make your left turn at the @poi[Sunrise Mountain Regional Library](1257349) and head through the neighborhood streets, east and south back to the Rio Vista multi-use path.

After you reach the multi-use path you will be following it south back to Rio Vista Park and to your start location.

# Important Reminders

Caution should be used when riding/exercising outdoors in the HOT Phoenix summer temperatures. Make sure you take plenty of water along for your ride.

Although New River Wash is dry most of the year, after local rain showers, the wash may be flowing over portions of the multi-use path. When the water is flowing over the path, it is not recommended to attempt crossing.

This route offers gradual inclines for the first 30 miles and sweet downhills nearly all the way back to the start. It utilizes city streets some with bike lanes and some without, but all streets are well-known bike routes. You will experience some beautiful desert views on your way to New River and across the Sonoran Desert preserve on Dove Valley Rd. (less)

This is a nice route to ride on weekends and holidays. Start and finish at SouthWest Bicycles in Peoria / Arrowhead shopping area and ride a combination of multi-use paths and bike lanes to the AZ State Capitol area and Wesley Bolin Plaza. The ride will take you through some of the historic district homes of Phoenix. (less)
